North Dakota's Unexpectedly Urban Side: Discover the Food, Art and Energy of Its Cities

Independent restaurants, contemporary art and signature events put Fargo, Grand Forks and Bismarck-Mandan on the itinerary for a city getaway

BISMARCK, N.D., Oct. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A hotel room inspired by a craft beer. Contemporary art that sparks conversation. Dinner shaped by the farmers and ranchers just beyond city limits. North Dakota's cities reward travelers who follow their curiosity downtown, where independent businesses, creative gathering spaces and local flavors offer a fresh perspective on the state.

In Fargo, Grand Forks and Bismarck-Mandan, gallery visits lead to dinner reservations, historic theaters anchor evenings out and seasonal celebrations bring downtown streets to life. From holiday markets in November to a film festival in March, the coming months offer compelling reasons to make a weekend of North Dakota's unexpectedly urban side.

Fargo: Follow the City's Creative Streak
Fargo's creative side extends from the art on gallery walls to the places visitors eat, shop, and stay. Downtown, independent storefronts, and the Fargo Theatre's iconic marquee set the scene for an afternoon that easily stretches into the evening.

Start at the Plains Art Museum, where contemporary, regional and Native American art offers different perspectives on the Northern Plains and beyond. The museum boasts free admission. Leave time to explore downtown shops before catching a film or live event at the historic Fargo Theatre, an Art Deco landmark that remains part of the city's cultural life.

At Brewhalla, choosing where to eat is part of the fun. The market brings locally owned food vendors and retailers together with Drekker Brewing Company, letting visitors move from coffee and shopping to dinner and craft beer in one gathering place. Travelers can even stay upstairs: the boutique hotel's rooms are individually themed around Drekker beers, making the overnight experience as distinctive as the market below.

For another downtown home base, Jasper Hotel pairs a boutique stay with fine dining and drinks at Rosewild. Make dinner a part of the itinerary, then head out to experience Fargo after dark.

Events to Put on Your Calendar: Christkindlmarkt fills the Fargo Civic Center with holiday shopping, food, live music and art demonstrations Nov. 20–22 and 27–29, 2026, with an Outdoor Winter Wonderland and Bier Hall with Drekker Brewing Company adding to the festivities. The Fargo Film Festival returns to the historic Fargo Theatre March 16–20, 2027, making downtown a home base for days of screenings and conversations over dinner between films.

Grand Forks: Pair Downtown Flavor with College-Town Energy
In Grand Forks, a day of contemporary art and downtown browsing can lead to dinner, a performance, or the excitement of University of North Dakota hockey. The university helps shape the city's cultural life, while independent restaurants and gathering places give visitors reasons to linger beyond the campus.

Explore the North Dakota Museum of Art on the UND campus, where exhibitions feature regional and international artists. Then head downtown to browse local shops and check the schedule at the Empire Arts Center, a historic venue for visual and performing arts.

Dinner offers another connection to the region. At Ely's Ivy, relationships with local farmers and ranchers help shape a changing menu, while the bar highlights regional craft beers and spirits. Nearby Half Brothers Brewing Company adds another downtown stop for locally brewed beer and food.

During hockey season, build an evening around a UND game at Ralph Engelstad Arena, pairing the atmosphere of college hockey with dinner downtown. Between cultural stops, the Red River Greenway offers space to walk and explore along the river.

Events to Put on Your Calendar: On Nov. 22, 2026, HollyDazzle Festival of Lights welcomes the holidays with a lighted parade, fireworks and activities across downtown Grand Forks and neighboring East Grand Forks, Minnesota. On Feb. 6, 2027, Greenway Snow Day turns a riverside trail into a winter gathering place with snowshoeing, ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides and cardboard sled races.

Bismarck-Mandan: Discover Capital Culture Along the Missouri
On opposite sides of the Missouri River, Bismarck and Mandan combine North Dakota's history with the food, art and independent businesses shaping the region today.

Begin at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum on the State Capitol grounds (also offering free admission), where history and fine art offer different perspectives on the region. In "There's a Story There: Art in the State Collections," 19 artworks bring landscapes, wildlife and historical figures into focus, with works by artists including John James Audubon, Karl Bodmer and John Singer Sargent.

Then take the art experience outdoors with a visit to Bismarck's Art Alley or stop along the Bismarck-Mandan Art Trail, discovering murals and public art throughout the community.

Downtown Bismarck's restaurants offer reasons to make dinner a centerpiece of the trip. Pirogue Grille emphasizes seasonal cooking, while Anima Cucina brings an Italian eatery and wine bar to the downtown mix. Add a stop at Laughing Sun Brewing Co. for a locally brewed beer or leave time to explore the coffee shops, including Copper Dog Cafe in Mandan, and boutiques in both downtowns.

The Missouri River connects the two cities and provides a scenic backdrop for a getaway that moves between museums, public art and evenings downtown.

Events to Put on Your Calendar: Plan a getaway around Bismarck's live theater and music. Dakota Stage presents The Woman in Black Jan. 28 through Feb. 7, 2027, bringing theatrical suspense to its downtown stage. On March 12 and 13, the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra presents "A New Beginning" at the historic Belle Mehus Auditorium, featuring the North Dakota premiere of Rebecca Burkhardt's Ballet for Cello and Orchestra with cellist Hannah Holman, plus works by Aaron Copland, including Lincoln Portrait narrated by Martin Sheen. Pair either performance with dinner downtown for an evening of local flavor and live arts.
