Northeast Student-Athletes Named National Finalists For Wendy's® High School Heisman® Award

DUBLIN, Ohio, Nov. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Of the 48,000 students who applied for this year's award, Andrew Miner from East Greenwich High School in East Greenwich, RI, and Carolyn Carrera from Riverhead High School in Riverhead, NY, were chosen as two of twelve National Finalists for the 2013 Wendy's^® High School Heisman^® Award. The award honors exceptional students who bring excellence in academics, athletics and community service.  

Andrew Miner, East Greenwich High School
Andrew Miner is a top scholar-athlete at East Greenwich High School. He has lettered in Baseball as well as Football, for which he was named Most Valuable Player, All-Conference and All-District for his accomplishments. An outstanding student as well, Andrew was named a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist and is also a member of the National Honor Society. He is involved in his community through the National Honor Society Peer Tutoring Program.

Carolyn Carerra, Riverhead High School
Carolyn Carerra is a triple-threat student-athlete at Riverheard High School. She has lettered in Soccer, Basketball and Lacrosse, for which she was named Most Valuable Player and All-Conference and also set several school records. In addition to athletic achievements, Carolyn was named Most Outstanding Student of the Year Award for AP Chemistry, Marine Biology, AP English, Latin IV/V, and Math 12 Honors. She is involved with her community through her volunteer work with the Riverhead Recreation Department.

Created in 1994 by Wendy's and the Heisman Memorial Trust, the Wendy's High School Heisman Award recognizes outstanding high-school seniors nationwide who excel in athletics, academics and in the community.  Students can nominate themselves for the award online, in addition to being recommended by principals, teachers, guidance counselors and coaches.  The most exceptional students are then selected to advance during extensive judging processes conducted at both state and national levels.
