NYU Winthrop Hospital's Eva Chalas, MD to serve as President Elect of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)

MINEOLA, N.Y., May 8, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- NYU Winthrop Hospital today announced that Eva Chalas, MD, Physician Director of the Center for Cancer Care, Vice Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Professor, NYU Long Island School of Medicine, has been named President Elect of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)–the specialty's leading professional membership organization dedicated to the improvement of women's health, with more than 58,000 professional members. Dr. Chalas specializes in treating women with gynecologic cancers and complex gynecologic conditions. She has been actively involved in clinical research and has published extensively on various women's health topics including the prevention and treatment of gynecologic cancers. This extensive experience, combined with her outstanding administrative and clinical leadership, and dedication to best practices, will serve as an asset to ACOG.

In her role as President Elect for ACOG beginning this month, Dr. Chalas will serve as a national officer of ACOG and the ACOG Foundation, which pursues innovative ideas in education delivery, patient, and physician advocacy, and the provision of full spectrum healthcare, including addressing the global issue of maternal mortality and morbidity. She will represent ACOG's values, mission, and message to medical organizations, government, media, and the public, and represent ACOG in the international health community.

Dr. Chalas has long been committed to raising the bar for NYU Winthrop's clinical cancer services, educational, and research activities. In her leadership role as Physician Director of NYU Winthrop's Center for Cancer Care, Dr. Chalas leads a multidisciplinary team in enhancing services in the areas of cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. In all components of cancer care, including patient outcomes and cancer care delivery, Dr. Chalas works with chairs of clinical departments to implement multidisciplinary best-practice strategies that not only provide patients with the best treatments, but are instrumental in improving cancer avoidance and early detection of the disease.

Actively involved with ACOG and its mission for more than three decades through her work on numerous committees, Dr. Chalas has served as a past Chair of ACOG District II, which includes New York and Bermuda, and as Chair of the District Chairs for the Washington, DC-based parent national organization. In addition, she has held leadership positions in the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, and the Foundation for Women's Cancer.

Over the years, Dr. Chalas has been repeatedly earned "Top Doctors" accolades by U.S. News and World Report, Castle Connolly, and Marquis' Who's Who. She was granted a leadership award by the National Republican Congressional Committee, and was named a Physician of Distinction by the American Cancer Society. Her commitment to medical student and resident physician education has also been recognized by several excellence-in-teaching awards.

Dr. Chalas received her medical degree from Stony Brook University School of Medicine and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at its medical center. Her post-graduate education as a fellow in gynecologic oncology was earned at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she also served as an American Cancer Society fellow. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and gynecologic oncology, and is a fellow of ACOG and the ACS.
