NOVA YORK, 10 de novembro de 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Oitenta e sete das principais associações comerciais e companhias nacionais e internacionais uniram suas forças com a Associação Nacional de Anunciantes, a ANA (Association of National Advertisers), formando a Coalizão para Vigilância Responsável de Domínios de Internet, a CRIDO (Coalition for Responsible Internet Domain Oversight) em oposição ao lançamento do programa de expansão de domínios de alto nível da ICANN, a Corporação para Atribuição de Nomes e Números na Internet. Entre os vários membros influentes da CRIDO estão a Grocery Manufacturers Association, a National Association of Manufacturers, a American Society of Association Executives, a National Restaurant Association, a Intellectual Property Owners Association, o American Council of Life Insurers, a Câmara de Comércio dos Estados Unidos e a World Federation of Advertisers (WFA).  A WFA representa uma rede global de 51 associações de anunciantes representando cerca de 90 por cento dos gastos das comunicações globais de marketing, equivalentes a US$ 700 bilhões anualmente.

Em nome de seus vários membros e indústrias, a CRIDO tem o compromisso de combater agressivamente o programa proposto pela ICANN, citando sua justificativa profundamente deficiente, custo excessivo e prejuízo para donos de marcas, probabilidade de dano cibernético predatório aos consumidores e incapacidade de agir pelo interesse público, uma das principais exigências de seu compromisso para com o Departamento de Comércio dos Estados Unidos (DOC).

O programa proposto pela ICANN permitiria que os participantes reivindicassem praticamente quaisquer palavras, genéricas ou de marca, como um domínio de Internet de alto nível. Domínios de Alto Nível é tudo que vem à direita do ponto, tal como .com e .org. Somente no primeiro ano, o plano da ICANN permitiria centenas de novos Domínios de Alto Nível e milhares no futuro. Isso pressionaria fortemente os donos de marcas em todos os níveis de negócios, incluindo pequenas empresas, consumidores, ONGs, instituições beneficentes e fundações a comprarem de forma defensiva e protegerem novos domínios de alto nível.

Caso o programa da ICANN prossiga, a CRIDO acredita firmemente que a perda da confiança nas transações pela Internet será substancial. Adicionalmente, a comunidade de marcas com e sem fins lucrativos irá sofrer por causa de bilhões de dólares em despesas desnecessárias – dinheiro que poderia ser melhor investido na melhoria dos produtos, despesas de capital e geração de empregos.
