OnApp Announces the World's Biggest Public Cloud, Built on a New Compute Market for Service Providers

Enables 2,000 OnApp clouds to share compute resources via the OnApp Federation, so applications can be deployed globally through any local OnApp cloud provider 

Today at HostingCon 2014, OnApp announced the ability for cloud providers to share compute resources (CPU, RAM and storage) through the OnApp Federation, so that their customers can deploy applications at locations all over the world, on demand. The OnApp Federation is a network of 167 service providers offering capacity at 170 locations, in 113 cities, across 43 countries. With more than twice the number of locations as the Amazon and Microsoft clouds combined, the addition of compute to the OnApp Federation will create the world's biggest public cloud - one that enables service providers to be as global, or as focused on specific customer needs, as they want.  

The new global compute capability is built on OnApp Market, a wholesale cloud marketplace for service providers. Service providers use OnApp Market to browse locations on the OnApp Federation, see prices and SLA data, and make any mix of locations available to their customers in real time, alongside their own. OnApp has deployed more than 2,000 clouds for 900 service providers in 93 countries, making a huge range of infrastructure types and potentially unlimited scale available to service providers and their customers.

The federated cloud model has already proven its worth for many OnApp customers, including the Belgian web host, Stone.IS. Stone used the OnApp Federation to provide highly resilient, highly distributed web application hosting for Tomorrowland, the world's largest electronic dance music festival. The OnApp Federation helped Stone handle huge spikes in traffic and enabled the company to win the project over Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure, because of the Federation's much broader international coverage.

The OnApp Federation has several advantages over traditional cloud brokerages, which may simplify running a workload across multiple clouds for the end customer, but do nothing to simplify all of the commercial relationships that the customer has to maintain. The OnApp Federation allows the local service provider to give their customers a 'single pane of glass' for deploying and managing applications in multiple locations, a single API, a single SLA and a single bill - massively reducing complexity and costs.

OnApp Market is the key enabling technology for the compute federation. It connects different service providers' clouds to the Federation, enables them to buy and sell capacity, acts as a central clearing house for transactions, manages wholesale pricing for each location, and provides SLA metadata about the performance and uptime of each location, so providers can choose the most appropriate capacity for their service and their clients. OnApp will also offer managed SLAs for time-critical or performance-intensive applications, selecting the most appropriate locations for providers to use as part of a managed service.

The new global compute capability previews in v3.3 of the OnApp platform. In this preview phase, 50 OnApp providers are lined up to provide compute capacity for the OnApp Federation, with nine locations available for testing today in the US, UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Russia and Belgium. OnApp expects this number to grow at least ten-fold in the next 12 months. General Availability will follow later this year, enabling federated compute for all OnApp cloud providers. The OnApp Federation and OnApp Market will support other cloud platforms in future releases.
