OpenCape's fiber backbone will support Gateway Fiber's fiber-to-the-home buildout in Falmouth, Barnstable, Yarmouth, and beyond.
BARNSTABLE, Mass., Oct. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- OpenCape, the operator of the region's 100% fiber optic network connecting Cape Cod to Boston and Providence, today welcomed Gateway Fiber to Cape Cod as it begins its expansion in the region. Gateway Fiber, which announced last month that it is bringing 100% fiber internet service to Falmouth, Barnstable, and Yarmouth residents, will utilize OpenCape's fiber optic backbone for this innovative service buildout.
OpenCape was founded in 2007 to help solve the widespread connectivity problems on Cape Cod and the surrounding regions as inadequate bandwidth, limited broadband coverage, and poor cell phone service threatened to hold the region back. The region's businesses and research institutions were finding it increasingly hard to compete globally due to the high cost, slow speeds, and poor availability of broadband. Today, OpenCape is working to strengthen communities and local economies by operating an open-access fiber network that promotes choice and competition while serving as the backbone of future-proof internet connectivity from Cape Cod to southern New England.
"Gateway Fiber is bringing real momentum and investment to Cape Cod, and we're thrilled that our state-of-the-art fiber optic network is helping bring faster connections to homeowners across the region," said Pete Saladino, CEO of OpenCape.
OpenCape's network spans more than 500 route miles across Cape Cod, southeastern Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, with direct Tier 1 connections into Boston and Providence. The backbone runs on the same class of carrier-grade optical transport and coherent routing platforms used by the world's largest network operators, delivering up to 800 Gbps per wavelength today with room to scale to 1.65 Tbps. The network was built as an open-access resource for the region and has served internet service providers, cellular backhaul customers, businesses, and municipalities for more than a decade.
"OpenCape has laid an important foundation for connectivity across Cape Cod, and we're excited to build on that investment," said Chris Surdo, CEO of Gateway Fiber. "The Cape has strong local communities, year-round residents, small businesses and seasonal homeowners who all need internet they can count on. Together, we can bring more choice and a better internet experience with 100% fiber internet, straightforward pricing, and service from a team that wants to be a part of the communities we serve. We've built strong momentum in Massachusetts, and we're excited to continue that growth with a partner that shares our commitment to the Cape."
