Ophthalmologist Dr. Frank W. Bowden Restores Jacksonville Jaguar Terrance Knighton's Sight to 20/20

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Aug. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Renowned ophthalmologist and corneal specialist Dr. Frank W. Bowden of Bowden Eye & Associates has performed surgery to fully repair a severely perforated globe and successfully restored Jaguar defensive tackle Terrance Knighton's vision. Knighton, whose career was in jeopardy after the eye injury, returned to the National Football League (NFL) last week.

In April of this year, Knighton's left eye was severely injured after a glass bottle shattered in his face. Knighton was rushed to Dr. Bowden for emergency surgery. He faced a grim prognosis with the ability to sense light, yet no vision in his left eye. 

"In a case with such extensive trauma there is a 50 percent chance that the patient will lose not only his vision, but his entire eye," said Dr. Bowden. Despite the devastating injury and poor odds, Dr. Bowden was able to save the eye, and even restore the vision.

"This was one of the most complex cases of eye trauma I have ever seen -- operating on Knighton's eye was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle," said Dr. Bowden. The ruptured eye (cornea) required over 20 sutures to repair, and left Knighton with severely impaired 20/400 vision.

Knighton was once again admitted for emergency surgery a week later where Dr. Bowden removed a traumatic cataract. Like the cataracts related to old age, traumatic cataracts are caused by direct injury to the lens of the eye and further impair the vision.

After the second surgery, Dr. Bowden and his medical team continued to expertly manage Knighton's treatment, bringing his vision incredibly to 20/40. This was a ten-fold improvement from his vision after the initial surgery, and an outcome that far exceeded medical expectations.

Today, as a testament to Dr. Bowden's profound skill as a surgeon and specialist, Knighton's vision has been restored to a perfect 20/20. Knighton's sight is now even better than it was before injury.
