Opus Expands Capital Capabilities with Hiring of Mark Kunkel as Senior Vice President of Capital Formation and Investment Strategy

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Opus announced today that Mark Kunkel has joined their capital markets team as senior vice president of capital formation and investment strategy. He reports directly to Pete Conlon, who was named Opus' chief financial officer and head of capital markets this past April.

Opus is a national leader in commercial real estate development and construction with nine offices across the country. Over the past two years, the company has placed greater emphasis on capital formation, capital relationships and investment strategy – areas central to the company's long-term growth. As part of this effort, Opus redefined the scope of their CFO role and created this new senior leadership position focused on expanding and diversifying their capital base.

In his new role, Kunkel is responsible for helping design, execute and scale Opus' capital formation and investment strategy, serving as the primary bridge between Opus and institutional investor partners. The development of new investment vehicles and fund strategies that expand the company's existing capital base beyond joint venture equity partnerships will drive long-term value creation across the enterprise.

Kunkel's decades of commercial real estate investment management experience directly support Opus' vision and strategic direction, particularly the company's focus on expanding and diversifying their capital relationships. Throughout his career, he has helped lead fund strategies and successfully managed the acquisition, financing and disposition of over $3.0 billion in investments and led portfolio management for over 12 million square feet.

Prior to joining Opus, Kunkel led capital formation for Doran Companies, primarily raising equity development capital from institutional investors including insurance companies and public pensions. Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership roles at Northmarq Fund Management, where he launched the company's fund management business, and AB CarVal (formerly CarVal Investors), where he spent 14 years sourcing, financing and managing real estate investments across six different equity and debt fund vehicles on behalf of a large institutional investor base.

Kunkel holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BSB in accounting and finance from the University of Minnesota. He is a CFA charterholder and holds the CPA designation.
