Opus(TM) Roof Blanket Saves Valuable Time on the Job for Minnesota Contractor
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- For roofing contractor Todd Burns of Todd Burns Construction and his crew, working in Minnesota can mean working around the weather. The company, based in Red Wing, MN, typically provides roofing, siding, concrete work and additions -- with the inside work performed in the colder season. On a recent metal roofing job, Todd, his son Jonathan and their crew found a way to save time and labor with Opus Roof Blanket, a completely new type of steep-slope roofing underlayment. Opus' unique composition provides the safest walking traction in the industry, according to third party lab testing.
"The first day of the job we had some early morning dew and the traction of Opus Roof Blanket was great -- we were able to cover the entire back side of the roof with the Decra stone-coated steel tiles very easily and didn't lose any time," said Todd. "The second day, we found a heavy coating of frost on a section of the roof." He explained that normally, he would not attempt to walk on a roof with frost and does not encourage it. "Since I heard Opus had the best traction, I had one of my guys hold on to me while I tested it. I had no problem walking on it at all, though as a precaution, I'd never assign someone to work in that area under heavy frost conditions. It was a good test though and we were very impressed with the great traction of Opus."
Developed by Propex, Opus Roof Blanket is safer and more convenient than felt paper or plastic sheet which can be slippery, according to the company's Executive Vice President, Ralph Bruno. "Steep-slope roofing jobs are not easy environments to work on," he said. "That's why six years of research and development went into this underlayment product, which is designed to meet the unique needs of roofing contractors."
Todd's son Jonathan found Opus Roof Blanket rolled out very easily and did not stick at the start of the roll or rip at the end of the roll like other materials. "We were able to cut it with a sharp knife and staple it with a hammer stapler very quickly," he said. "The tan color and unique surface allowed us to write on Opus and actually be able to see our marks where we had to work around the dormers," said Jonathan. "It's also easier to see a chalk line." He mentioned that even on a 75 degree (F) day, the roof can really heat up, but the tan color of Opus kept the roof much cooler. "It was noticeably cooler than felt paper, which typically adds about 10 degrees (F) to the temperature of the roof." Both he and Todd look forward to using Opus in extremely hot weather conditions to see how it performs.
Overall, Todd Burns and his crew were pleased to discover this new category of roofing underlayment which adds time-savings, safety and convenience to any roofing job. "You really don't save anything using cheap or flimsy underlayment," Todd added. "It will cost you in the long run and there are few things more important than safety on the job."
