Outraged by Children's Deaths, New York Model Announces 'Spanking-a-Day' for Charity
NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- CharitySpank365(dot)org, a new organization that seeks to raise money for charity in unconventional ways, has announced that an anonymous New York fashion and runway model has officially agreed to spank herself in 365 videos that will be posted on the site each day for an entire year starting on January 1, 2012. By requiring visitors to make a donation to view the videos, CharitySpank365(dot)org hopes to raise $1 million for charity by December 31, 2012. As an incentive to donors, if this fundraising goal is reached, the anonymous model, who is currently featured in faceless photos on the site, will reveal her face and name.
Daniel Rhodes, Marketing Director at CharitySpank365(dot)org, says that the model, who goes by "Charity," initially balked at the idea, but then changed her mind when she read a NY Times article about Pastor Michael Pearl, whose popular book, To Train Up A Child, advocates spanking and whipping children. As of November 2011, three children have died at the hands of parents who follow Pearl's teachings. According to "Charity," "I chose to do it because I want to tell Pastor Pearl and all his followers that their 'parenting' is in fact 'torture.'"
Each daily spanking will feature a different object designed to highlight a particular social issue. The first seven objects, chosen by "Charity," are already posted on the site. However, CharitySpank365(dot)org hopes to get visitors to send in objects that have "caused or represent pain" to them. Each object will then be featured in a daily spanking. Rhodes says that "we want these objects to spark conversation, span the political spectrum, represent both personal and public hurts, and even be playful at times."
While CharitySpank365(dot)org is currently a for-profit company that will be donating its first $1 million in profits to charity, its legal counsel is seeking to have 501(c)3 non-profit certification by mid-2012. The organization's pending Mission Statement asserts that "'Charity' will spank herself with objects of pain to bring pleasure not only to viewers but also to those who benefit from the charities to which we donate. Her spankings will bring healing by converting these objects from naughty to nice, from bad to good. Each slap will send a message to those these objects represent: It's not I that am naughty; it's YOU."
CharitySpank365(dot)org will donate their proceeds to The United Way, World Vision, Save the Children, Women's Funding Network, AmeriCares, Futures Without Violence, and the FaithTrust Institute, all organizations that help children, women, and the poor. As to why her identity remains hidden, "Charity" directly addresses this on the site: "First, I am an international model with a growing career, and doing spankings on the web, even for charity, could jeopardize that. Second, it adds to the fun. Finally, it's about the 'bottom' line: If I can raise $1 million for charity by December 31, 2012, I WILL show my face and name as a present for the New Year."
