Over Half of Americans Would Buy a Haunted Home -- If the Price Was Right
Paranormal activity isn't a top concern for most homeowners, with just 6% of Americans finding ghosts scarier than common home hazards such as asbestos or mold.
ST. LOUIS, Oct. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Over half of Americans (52%) would consider buying a house that was haunted, according to a new report from Real Estate Witch, an online publication owned by Clever Real Estate that connects readers with expert real estate advice.
Two-thirds of Americans (68%) say they'd offer below asking price for a house that was haunted, yet only 32% of haunted homeowners expect to sell for less than market value.
Among Americans who say they've lived in a real haunted house, 63% admit it would be harder to sell, while 68% say they would not willingly disclose the haunting to potential buyers. Still, 41% of haunted house owners expect to sell above market value — more than 2.5x the 16% of buyers who say they'd make such an offer on a haunted home.
Unsurprisingly, 67% of Americans think the government should require sellers to disclose a haunted house, but only four states actually have specific laws regarding the disclosure of haunted homes.
About 1 in 5 Americans (19%) believe they've lived in a home that was haunted, with 30% of Gen Z and 24% of millennials saying they have, compared to just 10% of boomers.
Of those who say they've lived in a haunted house, 1 in 4 (25%) knowingly chose to live there — more than double the 11% of respondents who said the same in 2024.
A majority of Americans (57%) say they'd feel uncomfortable living in a haunted house, although three-fourths (74%) wouldn't move right away if they learned it was haunted. Two-thirds (68%) still wouldn't move even if they saw a ghost.
Americans are more concerned about everyday home problems than spirits. Nearly all respondents (94%) fear home repair issues more than ghosts, including mold (70%), termites (65%), and asbestos (63%).
When it comes to complete dealbreakers, more than half of Americans (52%) would refuse to buy a home near a nuclear waste facility. In comparison, just 22% say they would completely rule out a home simply because it was rumored to be haunted.
In addition, about half of Americans would rather live with spirits than a hoarder (50%) or someone with bad body odor (49%).
