Packers Plus and Geodynamics successfully complete Habanero-4 geothermal well in Australia
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Aug. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ - Packers Plus Energy Services Inc. in partnership with Geodynamics Limited (ASX:GDY) has successfully completed a vertical geothermal well as part of Geodynamics Innamincka Deeps Project in the Cooper Basin of South Australia.
"The success of this job has enabled Geodynamics to commission their 1MWe Habanero Pilot Plant producing Australia's first Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) generated power," said Mark Rivenbark, Packers Plus Director, Eastern Hemisphere. Geodynamics announced on July 22, 2013 that the company had commissioned the 1MWe Habanero Pilot Plant and successfully concluded planned step rate testing and an extended turbine test run.
Packers Plus worked closely with Geodynamics to design specialized Inferno™ completions equipment capable of withstanding 300°C (600°F) and 69 MPa (10,000 psi) pressure. This equipment was instrumental to the EGS process, which involves stimulating existing fractures in low-permeability, high-temperature rock to allow water to flow through and be superheated. Geoff Ward, CEO of Geodynamics stated, "the willingness of Packers Plus to design and test their equipment to the limit has made them a strategic partner for Geodynamics."
"Packers Plus had successfully completed the Jolokia 1 geothermal well for Geodynamics in 2010, and we built on that expertise to deliver both the equipment and on-site services to ensure success with the Habanero 4 well," said Cameron Radtke, Packers Plus Technical Services Manager, Eastern Hemisphere.
This latest operational success with Geodynamics establishes Packers Plus as a leader in completion equipment innovation for challenging environments and applications. This opens new markets in not only geothermal, but steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) for heavy oil production.
