NEW YORK, Nov. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Paddle8, the leading online auction house, announces the latest Post-War and Contemporary Art auction, with a focus on the power of art to question established conventions. Comprised of 40 works of contemporary art ranging from painting, sculpture, mixed media and works on paper, offered online at $3,000 - $120,000, the sale features a selection of works that critique and fuel debate.
"Art serves as a forum for expressing who we are and what we value as a society. Now is an important time to feature artists whose work confronts disillusionment with America and deconstructs national self-image," states Shea Goli, Senior Specialist of Post-War and Contemporary Art. "Contemporary art holds a special place in our culture and society," says Megan Mulrooney, Senior Specialist of Post-War and Contemporary Art. "These works are simultaneously compelling visual and material objects as well as thought-provoking critiques of our times."
Jean-Michel Basquiat calls out the history of cotton in an implicit critique of slavery in Untitled, Origins of Cotton (1981), while Kara Walker more directly addresses this dark history in Middle Passages: Water Bearer? What's a Water Bearer? (2004). Theaster Gates' Untitled South Side Wall Sculpture (Chicago) (c. 2001) serves as a stoneware and glaze relic from rebuilding America's crumbling inner cities. Dave Cole takes on the emblem of the United States itself with American Flag (Lead), (2013). Emily May Smith's Hunger (2015) takes a jab at masculinity and the stereotype of man's insatiable gaze, while Mike Bouchet comments on the media culture of liberation in ProLib (2014).
The sale is also highlighted by artworks by Joan Mitchell, John Armleder, and Sam Francis.
