Painting Expert Melvin Jones Explains Cabinet Painting vs. Replacement in HelloNation

The article explains how cabinet condition, preparation, durable finishes, and project costs can help homeowners choose between refinishing and replacement.

LEXINGTON, S.C., Oct. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Should you paint your kitchen cabinets or replace them? According to a HelloNation article, many people overlook the value and durability of cabinet painting. Melvin Jones of Carolina Painting and Pressure Cleaning, Inc. explains that the right cabinet refinishing process can transform the look of a kitchen while saving thousands of dollars and reducing disruption.

The article opens by noting that full cabinet replacement is one of the most expensive parts of any home remodeling project. For many South Carolina homes, replacement simply is not necessary. If the cabinet boxes are sturdy and the doors remain in good condition, cabinet painting or refinishing offers a cost-effective way to achieve a fresh, modern appearance. A professional finish restores the beauty of solid wood cabinets while extending their life for years to come.

The difference between cabinet painting and replacement comes down to structure and surface quality. When cabinets are solid, professional painters can clean, sand, and coat existing wood with specialized enamel finishes that cure into a hard, durable surface. These coatings are designed for high-use areas such as kitchens, where moisture and constant handling can damage standard paints. The HelloNation article emphasizes that success depends on surface preparation and product quality, not demolition or reconstruction.

Cabinet refinishing begins with thorough cleaning to remove grease, oil, and residue. Even a thin film of residue can interfere with adhesion. After cleaning, doors and drawers are removed, labeled, and sanded smooth. A primer formulated for wood or laminate is applied to create a uniform base. Then, a strong topcoat such as acrylic urethane or catalyzed enamel forms a moisture-resistant barrier that protects the surface from stains and wear. The process requires patience and multiple stages, but a professional approach delivers a long-lasting finish that rivals factory-applied coatings.

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that professionally refinished cabinets can match or even exceed the durability of new ones. When applied correctly, high-quality finishes resist chipping, humidity, and heat. These coatings also protect against common cleaning products used in kitchens. Refinishing provides design flexibility too, allowing homeowners to choose from a wide range of colors, gloss levels, and textures. From modern white finishes to warm wood tones, the right professional finish offers all the style of new cabinetry without the high cost.

Cabinet replacement, by contrast, involves demolition and installation that often last several weeks. It requires removing countertops, backsplashes, and hardware, and can lead to adjustments in plumbing or electrical systems. For structurally sound cabinets, this level of work is often unnecessary. Choosing cabinet painting instead of replacement allows South Carolina homeowners to maintain their kitchen layout while cutting costs significantly. The HelloNation article notes that this option appeals to homeowners seeking a quality kitchen update without the waste or disruption of full construction.

Humidity plays a major role in how long finishes last in South Carolina homes. Warm, moist air can cause wood to expand and contract through the seasons. High-quality cabinet finishes are designed to remain flexible so they resist cracking and peeling. Proper ventilation during the painting process is equally important. Professional painters often use controlled environments or spray stations to ensure the coatings cure evenly and reach full hardness. These steps are essential for paint durability in a region with constant humidity changes.

Preparation is the most critical stage of cabinet refinishing. Skipping sanding or using the wrong primer can lead to visible imperfections or weak adhesion. A true professional finish requires multiple rounds of sanding, priming, and coating. Spray equipment creates a smooth surface without brush marks, resulting in a seamless look similar to new cabinetry. According to Jones, craftsmanship and attention to detail are what separate long-lasting cabinet painting from quick, temporary fixes.

Before deciding between painting and replacement, homeowners should carefully evaluate their existing cabinets. If the structure is strong, doors align properly, and there are no signs of water damage, cabinet refinishing is likely the better choice. Replacement should be considered only for cabinets that are warped, cracked, or structurally unsound. A professional inspection helps determine whether refinishing or replacement best fits the homeowner's budget and goals.

Cabinet painting also supports sustainability by reducing waste. Keeping existing materials out of landfills makes the project more environmentally responsible. Because most refinishing work occurs on-site, the kitchen remains functional during much of the process. This convenience allows homeowners to continue their daily routines with minimal interruption.

In the end, both cabinet painting and replacement serve valuable purposes. Replacement builds an entirely new structure, while refinishing restores and protects what already works. For many South Carolina homes, professional cabinet painting offers the ideal balance of quality, efficiency, and affordability. When combined with good preparation, durable materials, and experienced workmanship, refinished cabinets can look brand new and last for years.
