The Employees' Choice Awards rely solely on the input of employees who elected to participate in an anonymous online survey about their jobs, work environments and companies between November 14, 2012 and November 12, 2013.

The company review survey included both quantitative and qualitative questions designed to capture a genuine and authentic look at what it is like to work in particular jobs and/or at companies. The survey asked employees to rate their satisfaction, as well as other key workplace factors such as career opportunities, compensation and benefits, work/life balance, senior management, culture and values. Employees were also encouraged to describe the best and the worst reasons about working at their company.
To be considered for the list, a company must have between 250-999 employees and had to receive 20 approved company reviews during the window of eligibility. The final list is compiled based on Glassdoor's proprietary algorithm, which takes into account quantity, quality and consistency of reviews.
