PBC Elects Kathy L. Pape As First Woman Chairperson
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 13, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Kathy L. Pape, president of Pennsylvania American Water, was elected Chair of the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Business Council (PBC), a business association which works to make the Commonwealth more economically competitive. PBC also operates PEG PAC, an affiliated political action committee, and the PBC Education Foundation, an affiliated 501(c)(3). The election was held when the organization conducted its annual meeting on May 7.
Pape is the fourth Chair of PBC which was formed in 2007 through the merger of the Pennsylvania Business Roundtable and Pennsylvanians for Effective Government. The original organizations were founded in 1979 and 1972, respectively. Pape is the first woman to chair the organization or its predecessors.
Kathy Pape rejoined Pennsylvania American Water as the company's president in July 2007. She worked for the firm previously as regional counsel and manager of finance, where her responsibilities included rates and regulatory affairs, finance, budgeting and customer service for 10 states. Pape was named senior vice president of American Water's Mid-Atlantic Division in October 2011, to lead the company's subsidiaries in Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia, along with Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania American Water is the largest regulated water utility in the commonwealth, providing quality water and wastewater services to approximately 2.2 million people in 390 communities.
Earlier in her career, Pape served as senior vice president, treasurer and rate counsel for Aqua America, Inc.; vice president of rates for General Waterworks; assistant counsel to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission; and assistant consumer advocate for the Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate. She earned her J.D. from Dickinson School of Law and a LL.M. in Taxation from Villanova University School of Law
Pape listed as her goals continuing the strong membership and financial growth of PBC and achieving the organization's public policy goals which include:
- Passage of an on-time, fiscally responsible, no-tax-increase state budget;
- Continued corporate tax reform;
- Implementation of Pennsylvania Common Core academic standards;
- Enactment of a plan to increase funding for transportation infrastructure replacement and maintenance.
- Privatization of alcoholic beverage wholesale and retail sales; and
- Reduction of the state's public pension liability.
Also elected as officers of PBC were: Michael George, CEO of QVC to the post of Secretary, and Gretchen R. Haggerty, CPA, CFO & Executive VP of United States Steel Corporation to the post of Treasurer.
