PDE Awards Farm to School Grants to 30 Pennsylvania Schools
HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 3, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera today announced the awarding of Farm to School grants to schools across the state, which will provide students with access to fresh, healthy food sourced locally. Through the program, 30 awardees received grants of up to $1,000 to implement farm to school activities.
"Promoting healthy eating habits and providing access to fresh, local foods to students will not only benefit students, but farms as well," said Sec. Rivera. "The Farm to School Grant Program will enable the students of the commonwealth to start practicing good nutrition in youth, encouraging them to grow up to be adults who shop locally and health-consciously."
The Farm to School Grant Program allows schools to offer local product taste-testing, farm-related field trips, school garden activities, and the inclusion of local products in school meals. Funding is provided by PDE's Division of Food and Nutrition.

Last week, PDE Executive Deputy Secretary David Volkman and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding witnessed Farm to School in action at York Suburban Middle School as students sampled produce that the school district sourced from Flinchbaugh's Orchard, Millers Plant Farm, and Brogue Hydroponics.
The 2015 USDA Farm to School Census shows that 44 percent of surveyed Pennsylvania school districts participate in farm to school activities, and that there are more than 130 school gardens growing in Pennsylvania.
