Pennsylvania State Police Seize Over $8.5 Million in Heroin and $1 Million in Crystal Meth for the First Quarter of 2014

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan today announced troopers seized over $16 million in heroin, crystal meth and other prohibited drugs in the first quarter of 2014.

"Governor Corbett has tasked the Pennsylvania State Police with dismantling drug organizations that operate or are responsible for the illicit drug trade occurring within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania," Noonan said. "These seizures underscore the Governor's unwavering commitment to defeating these illegal criminal enterprises that can lead to violence and fatalities."

In the first quarter of 2014, troopers seized over 17 kilos of heroin (approximately 37 lbs.) and over 10 kilos of methamphetamine (approximately 23 lbs.) with a combined approximate street value of $9.5 million. In addition, state police seized over 700,000 prescription pills and 1,325 pounds of marijuana valued at over $4 million. Troopers seized over 23 pounds of cocaine with an estimated value of over $1 million.

"Our troopers conduct various covert and undercover operations on a multitude of levels and troopers are trained in various interdiction techniques, from undercover operations to the detection of criminal activity during routine traffic stops," said Noonan. "These enforcement efforts certainly have an impact on the flow of drugs that are coming into and passing through Pennsylvania."

In 2013, the state police seized over $55 million in prohibited drugs.
