LOS ANGELES, July 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Penske Media Corporation today announced the hire of Michael Buckner as its first-ever chief photographer, signalling a significant step in PMC's expansion in the editorial images business.
Buckner has been a photojournalist with Getty Images for more than 10 years covering the entertainment industry in Los Angeles and around the world. He joins the company one month after PMC announced its new multiyear alliance with Shutterstock, Inc. (NYSE: SSTK) to create and license entertainment and fashion images and videos to the world's top media, publishing and creative companies.
"Under our new alliance, PMC is positioned to leverage Shutterstock's outstanding technology and innovative marketplace for our editorial photography business," said PMC Chairman and CEO Jay Penske. "We're thrilled to welcome Michael to the PMC and Shutterstock team and are confident he has the dynamic talent to spearhead our imminent growth."
Based in PMC's Los Angeles office, Buckner will be tasked with driving the creation of entertainment imagery and video assets for Variety and other PMC brands. These new images will build upon PMC's deep photo archives currently held by Variety and WWD.
"Michael is a stand-out photographer who is well-positioned and respected in the industry," said PMC VP of Creative Nelson Anderson. "He has a real talent for smart visual storytelling and understands Variety's unique audience in a sophisticated way."
Included in the Shutterstock alliance are PMC's more than 50 annual events, which includes Variety's intimate and unique conversations with today's top film and TV talent at festivals and premieres around the world, as well as red carpet celebrations, award shows, and executive conferences. PMC events and access also include red carpet and fashion runway events associated with PMC's more than 20 other media brands, including WWD, Hollywood Life, Deadline Hollywood, Variety Latino and Footwear News.
"I'm honored to join the PMC and Variety teams and be part of PMC's move to align with Shutterstock's compelling vision for the future direction of editorial imagery," said Buckner.
Deep-rooted in Los Angeles, Buckner holds a bachelor's degree in print journalism from the University of Southern California. Prior to being a photographer with Getty Images from 2006 to 2015, he was a photographer at Reuters News Pictures from 2005 to 2006 and prior to that an editor at WireImage from 2003 to 2005.
