The tragedy happened at the School for International Studies in Boerum Hill Brooklyn when 21-year old special-needs student Dyasha Phelps Smith was eating a muffin in her classroom. It is not clear whether or not anyone attempted the Heimlich maneuver, but it is known that she was taken to New York Methodist Hospital where she passed away.
The student's mother, Catherine Smith, who said Dyasha was autistic and hyperactive but otherwise in good health, accused authorities of negligently allowing her daughter to choke to death by failing to provide her the individualized attention she was supposed to have. Ms. Smith also said that she found out about the tragedy from doctors at the hospital rather than from anyone at the school and is looking for answers.
