VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich., Dec. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Ricardo plc today announced the appointment of Peter Moore as the global market sector director for defense. Moore is a highly respected industry professional whose career has been defined by a series of senior level appointments within the defense sector. He joins Ricardo from U.K.-based VT Group (now a division of Babcock International plc), where he was the strategic development director for defense and a member of the divisional defense board.
Previously, Moore served as managing director of the VT Land division, where he carried overall profit and loss responsibility for the group's land-based defense business. In this role he was highly successful in international business growth, particularly within the U.S. market, where he was instrumental in developing key strategic alliances and partnerships.
Moore's career is marked by very senior roles within the public sector, having served as chief executive of Army Base Repair Organization, a U.K. Ministry of Defence-owned company. This large and complex defense engineering business, now known as the Defence Support Group, operates from multiple locations and has a workforce of 2,500 employees.
Moore joins Ricardo at a time when the company's defense business is growing. In addition to vehicle engineering programs for the British Army such as R-WMIK+ and Vixen upgrades, Ricardo has played a central role in the development of the Ocelot light protected patrol vehicle, in partnership with Force Protection Europe. Ricardo will also be responsible for a significant element of the vehicle's manufacturing.
Separately, Ricardo is successfully leveraging its engine technology in the development of the heavy fuel Wolverine family of UAV engines, the first of which – the Wolverine3 – was flight tested for the first time in October at the U.S. Department of Energy's Nevada National Security Site.
Commenting on Moore's appointment, Ricardo CEO Dave Shemmans said:
"Peter Moore joins the Ricardo defense business at a time of recent significant growth, and brings with him the skills, experience and expertise that, I firmly believe, will enable him to take this activity to an altogether higher level. His senior level background in the international defense services market – both on the commercial and public sector sides of the industry – will be invaluable to Ricardo as we seek to grow this very important global business stream. The fact that Ricardo is able to attract the very best of international talent in this way is demonstrative of the company's success in building a globally leading, multi-industry engineering services and technology business that creates significant value for both customers and shareholders alike."
With technical centers and offices throughout Europe, the United States and Asia, Ricardo provides strategic consulting and engineering expertise ranging from vehicle systems integration, controls and electronics, and hardware and software development to the latest driveline and transmission systems and gasoline, diesel, hybrid and fuel-cell powertrain technologies. Ricardo's customers include the world's major automakers and suppliers as well as manufacturers in the military, commercial, off-highway and clean-energy sectors. The company also serves in advisory roles to governmental and independent agencies. Ricardo's U.S. operation, Ricardo, Inc., is headquartered in Van Buren Township, Mich.
