Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Reaffirms Its Commitment To Eradicate Hazing Amongst Its Members
WASHINGTON, April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Several months after issuing a stern warning to its members regarding the negative impact of hazing on the organization, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is reaffirming its commitment to eradicate hazing amongst its membership. The organization presently celebrating 100 years of service to communities internationally has a rich history of not condoning hazing. Guided by its motto "CULTURE FOR SERVICE AND SERVICE TO HUMANITY," Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., lead by its 34th International President Jonathan A. Mason, Sr., continues to demonstrate the eagerness to transform its reputation with the best conduct pertaining to hazing.

"Over the past year, Phi Beta Sigma has produced anti-hazing sensitivity training materials for our chapters and for other organizations that are committed to ending the culture of hazing," said President Mason, Sr. "In launching our Anti-Hazing Week several months ago, we are further demonstrating our commitment to end hazing throughout our organization," he added.
In 2012, the Anti-Hazing Campaign was introduced via a partnership with the National Action Network at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. As part of the campaign, supporting documents were developed (along with a video), a town hall meeting was held on the subject, workshops were facilitated and chapters were encouraged to participate in the National Anti-Hazing Awareness Day held on September 6, 2012. These activities educated and empowered PBS Brotherhood to serve as agents of change in the battle against hazing.
Through its National Sigma Beta Clubs, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has been at the forefront of providing mentorship and leadership development to primarily, but not exclusively, African American young men between the ages of 8-18 years old. Recently when President Barack Obama remarked during his July 19, 2013 White House Briefing, "And for us to be able to gather together business leaders and local elected officials and clergy and celebrities and athletes, and figure out how are we doing a better job helping young African American men feel that they're a full part of this society and that they've got pathways and avenues to succeed," Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. rallied its stakeholders and joined President Obama in his quest to help young African American boys. Partnering with Camp New Joy and Leadership At Its Best, two youth non-profit organizations, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. members are producing thousands of success stories in cities across the country and around the world.
As Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. celebrates its Centennial year (2014), President Mason's administration is committed to redoubling its efforts to stamp out hazing amongst its brotherhood while continuing to mentor and provide leadership opportunities for young men, so that they can graduate from the colleges and universities they are attending. A recent case where one of its expelled members was fined $1.6 million dollars by a South Carolina court for a hazing incident proves the negative impact hazing can have on an individual's life.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity established in 1914 on Howard University is a global organization with over 450 chapters and 150,000 members. To learn more visit www.phibetasigma1914.org
