WARRENVILLE, Ill., May 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Proactive Building Water Management Teams need tools to address problems in a timely manner and next day test results fill the gap between water sampling and effective decision making. Phigenics is proud to announce the publication of Next Day Legionella PCR: a highly reliable negative screen for Legionella in the built environment article in the Journal of Water and Health.
A new testing strategy for Legionella, the Next Day Legionella PCR, uses a rapid analytical method which detects Legionella DNA in a water sample and determines which samples are Legionella DNA-free. The study describes validation test results for 11,125 building water samples analyzed by Phigenics Analytical Services Laboratories from 2018-2019. Results from Next Day Legionella PCR negative screen analyses were compared to results from the conventional culture method (ISO 11731). 99.9% of PCR-negative samples reported the next day after sampling were culture-negative when reported after 10 days incubation. Next day results for the PCR are made possible by using the innovative protocol, P.U.R.E.™ (Phigenics Ultra Rapid DNA Extraction) to significantly reduce analysis time. The paper documents benefits of using the negative screen in rapid assessment of disinfection procedures and for locating Legionella DNA-free areas in building water systems. Phigenics Research Associate, Katherine Fisher says, "The Legionella testing field is expanding, becoming more comprehensive and requiring high sample-throughput. Our article documents use of a reliable (99.9%), high-value negative screening strategy that can save time, resources and improve patient safety. These testing benefits are critical for Water Management Teams who must rapidly solve problems."
Phigenics sells comprehensive water management programs. Facility managers and building owners use these programs to optimize the total cost of their water systems by improving safety and efficiency. These programs include regulatory compliance, data management and water testing analytical services, including Legionella testing services. As a non-conflicted, third party, Phigenics provides independent verification and validation that programs are defensible and water management goals have been achieved in the most cost-effective manner.
