Phoenix Marketing International Research Shows Rebound in Number of Very Wealthy Households in U.S.

RHINEBECK, N.Y., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Phoenix Affluent Marketing Service, a Phoenix Marketing International practice, announced today the number of penta-millionaires in the U.S. increased by 16% as of mid-year 2010.

Phoenix's annual market sizing analysis and aggregate wealth rankings show that, while the overall number of affluent households increased by only 4% from mid-year 2009 to mid-year 2010, the number of Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) households increased by double digits after two years of declines. Phoenix defines "affluent" as households with $250,000 or more in liquid wealth, or $150,000 or more in annual income, and "UHNW" as households with $5 million or more in liquid assets.

"It is not surprising that we saw such a dramatic increase in the number of very wealthy households," says David Thompson, Managing Director of the Phoenix Affluent Market. "Given their exposure to the equity markets, the high end of the wealth spectrum tends to grow or contract at a greater rate than the average affluent household." The Phoenix data shows that as the S&P 500 index contracted significantly through mid-year 2009, the number of UHNW households followed a similar pattern. As the S&P 500 index climbed by double digits from late June 2009 to the same period in 2010, the number of UHNW households followed suit.

In contrast, despite the market volatility, the Phoenix data shows that the broad affluent market in the U.S. has managed to register small gains in numbers over the past three years. This is primarily due to growth in upper incomes rather than portfolio gains among mainstream affluent investors.
