Family and privately owned businesses have a tremendous impact on the nation's total economic climate. They account for more than half the total employment, new job creation and Gross Domestic Product in the U.S. To honor the enormous positive contributions made by family and privately owned companies, both large and small, the University of Cincinnati and the Goering Center for Family & Private Business each year present the annual Tri-State Family and Private Business of the Year Awards. All of the applicants are judged by an independent panel of judges on several of the 10 best practices of family and private businesses as defined by the Goering Center.
John Morrisroe founded the Pilot Chemical Company, a producer of surfactants and other specialty chemicals that are used in a wide variety of industries, in 1952, in Santa Fe Springs, California. As VP of Research at Purex, Mr. Morrisroe invented Ice-Cold Sulfonation (ICS) Technology in 1951. He obtained a patent for the breakthrough innovation, and left Purex to begin his own company. With a mission to produce the best quality products and a willingness to innovate and meet the needs of customers, he assembled a team of chemists and began manufacturing anionic surfactants.
In 1972, Paul Morrisroe, John's son, joined Pilot as an engineer and in 2000 became the CEO. In 1995, the company moved its headquarters to Sharonville, Ohio. The third generation of the Morrisroe family is now employed at the company. More than $56MM has been invested in the company's facilities, over the past five years, to improve the workplace environment and safety, reduce employee stress, improve efficiencies and meet the needs of our customers.
Pilot is also an active contributor and participant in local community events at its locations in Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey and Texas as well as a sponsor of the U.S. National Luge Team.
