Pittsburgh Welcomes the First of 22 NCAA Championships
SportsPITTSBURGH announces campaign asking Pittsburghers to help welcome student-athletes
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, SportsPITTSBURGH executives, and NCAA and Saint Vincent College representatives held a press conference to welcome the first of the 22 NCAA championships awarded to Pittsburgh. The NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship begins Thursday at the A.J. Palumbo Center, and the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Regionals will take place Saturday at Schenley Park.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald welcomed the NCAA on behalf of Allegheny County and proclaimed November 15-17, 2018 as NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship Days in Allegheny County.
The Office of Mayor Bill Peduto also proclaimed today, November 13, 2018, NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship Day.
During the press conference, SportsPITTSBURGH announced a campaign encouraging Pittsburghers to support the student-athletes who will compete in the upcoming events. The campaign features a video of city officials, athletic directors and student-athletes from Clarion University and Slippery Rock University, executives from SportsPITTSBURGH and VisitPITTSBURGH, and local sports ambassadors. Pittsburgh will welcome eight elite Division III Women's Volleyball teams during this week's national championship. Saint Vincent College is the host institution for this championship.
Another 1,000 plus student-athletes will travel to Pittsburgh for the NCAA Division II National Championships Festival, November 27 – December 1. The Festival, co-hosted by Clarion University and Slippery Rock University, will crown champions in women's volleyball, women's field hockey, men's and women's cross country and men's and women's soccer.
