DETROIT, April 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Challenge Detroit is an initiative that brings young talent to help revitalize Detroit. The annual leadership development and training program, selects approximately 30 fellows each year to work for local host companies, volunteer in community service projects, and experience the culture of Detroit.
"I am extremely pleased and honored to have been selected a board member of Challenge Detroit," said Kulka.
A true Michigander, Kulka's life and work have centered on the state. Born in Warren, Mich., Detroit's largest suburb, his father worked at General Motors and Kulka graduated with an engineering degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing.
He started PM Environmental with Peter Bosanic in 1992. PM has grown to 21 offices throughout the United States and is headquartered in Michigan with locations in Lansing, Berkley and Grand Rapids.
PM Environmental has sponsored a Challenge Detroit fellow since the program's inception. The company also works extensively with Brownfield redevelopments in Detroit and throughout Michigan.
"Entering our third year as a host company, I look forward to increasing brand awareness nationally for this incredible group of talented future leaders," said Kulka. "I am also interested in taking advantage of placing the hundreds of candidates that are not selected in positions with companies that have offices in Detroit," he said. "Companies with Detroit operations have a thirst for raw talent that has a passion for being part of Detroit's resurgence."
The 16-person, Challenge Detroit Board of Directors contributes to the overall success of the program by helping staff maintain the financial integrity of the organization, develop and approve near-term and long-range plans, and support the program's mission of attracting tomorrow's leaders who will contribute to the revitalization of the greater Detroit region.
"Our board is a key driver to our success with host company partnerships and fundraising, two key elements to running our organization successfully," said Deirdre Green Groves, co-founder and executive director of Challenge Detroit.
Board Members can be considered for the position based on their level of engagement in related areas (i.e. nonprofit challenge partners, host companies, etc.), or nominated by other board members or themselves. Each potential board member is presented to the board as a nominee for approval based on how the individual has engaged to-date and how their personal passions align with those of the organization.
"Mike is a wonderful example of this," said Groves. "There was no question when the board considered his nomination, recognizing his support of Challenge Detroit as a long-term host company partner and his commitment to the city and region, embodied in his personal spirit and the focus of his company."
