Porton Group: 3M Suit Described As A "Publicity Stunt Disguised as a Lawsuit"

WHAT: 3M has been sued in a currently ongoing trial in High Court in London by a British Ministry of Defense-owned company and its equity partner, The Porton Group, owners of "BacLite". BacLite is a British Ministry of Defense invention that detects the "Super-Bug" staph infection, MRSA, quickly and inexpensively and can save lives of hospital patients.  3M's Chairman and CEO, George Buckley, recently knighted, was quoted in the early days of U.K. trial as suggesting it was time for 3M to "pull the plug" and walk away from contract commitments to sell BacLite for three years, but 3M botched US trials and failed to obtain FDA approval to sell BacLite in the United States, Canada and Australia as it had promised to do. 3M is in the middle of a trial for breach of contract ongoing in the London High Court. Yet on Monday 3M filed suit against Porton, a Dubai company and its CEO, Harvey Boulter, a Dubai resident, in a New York City local court, but never "served" the suit on Porton or Boulter (thus the case still hasn't "begun"). Instead 3M gave a copy of it to the U.K. Guardian newspaper, which published the story on Monday.  Attorneys for Porton and Boulter from the firm of Boies Schiller and Flexner deny the charge of "blackmail," based on comments made in confidential settlement discussions as, "false, reckless, and fanciful."
