Presence Saint Joseph Hospital Receives Estate Gift

ELGIN, Ill., June 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Presence Saint Joseph Hospital (PSJH), Elgin, is the recipient of the largest family estate gift in recent history – a $1.2 million bequest from philanthropists Thomas J. and Barbara A. Galvin, of Elgin.

A 46 year marriage and eight children didn't allow for much leisure time, but Barbara Galvin still gave generously of her time and resources to organizations and causes she believed in - including her committed service to the Foundation Board of PSJH and philanthropic gifts to the Catholic Church and other community organizations. The Galvins were members of Saint Catherine of Siena Church in West Dundee. Barbara passed in January 2014 and Thomas passed in 2003.

The family has a long and distinguished history of philanthropy. Thomas' father Joseph Galvin, and brother, Paul Galvin, co-founded Motorola, Inc. Joseph's mother, Myrtle L. "Pete" Galvin, was a longtime benefactor of Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, specifically the Meadows Regional Cancer Center as a result of a long-term friendship with the late Sister June Does and admiration for the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart and their support of the Catholic Health System.

In 1928, Paul V. and Joseph Galvin incorporated Motorola's founding company—the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation—in Chicago.  Joseph passed away in 1944 before Motorola, Inc. was formed.  Presence Saint Joseph leaders are working with the family to determine an appropriate project fund that will help carry out their wishes.
