President Obama Thanks 100Kin10 in Video

NEW YORK, May 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- President Barack Obama, in a pre-recorded video for 100Kin10's third annual Summit, applauded 100Kin10, its partner organizations, and their collective success in their commitment to "train and recruit more than 40,000 STEM teachers by 2016 and to encourage more of these talented educators to stay in the classroom longer." The President hearkened to his State of the Union address in 2011, where he "announced a national goal to prepare 100,000 new teachers in science, technology, engineering, and math over the next decade." Speaking directly to the "200 partners, from local government, to national organizations to global corporations" that have made commitments to action in response to the President's call since 100Kin10's founding in 2011, the President thanked them for their continued efforts and encouraged them to keep up the great work, saying "thanks in part to the commitments all of you have made, we're making progress."

100Kin10 is a multi-sector network addressing the national imperative to train 100,000 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers by 2021. Its 200 partners include non-profits, universities, school districts, corporations, museums, charter management organizations, states, and federal agencies. Each partner has made a unique, above-and-beyond commitment to improve STEM learning for all students by (1) increasing the supply of great STEM teachers; (2) helping STEM teachers improve, stay in the classroom longer, and reach more kids; or (3) building the movement.

In the first three years of the effort, 100Kin10 partners have recruited and prepared more than 12,000 teachers. Partners are projected to prepare more than 44,000 teachers by 2016, five years into the project's ten-year timeline. The network's continued growth will add to this total number. In addition, more than 100 partners are working to support and help improve current classroom teachers so that more of them stay in the profession.

Using innovative tools to support partner work, an ambitious R&D and shared-learning platform, and collaborative funds that have raised more than $57 million in support of the work of partners, 100Kin10 works with partner organizations to help them achieve their commitments and overcome obstacles to realizing the goal of 100,000 excellent STEM teachers.
