EXPERT ALERTS:
Assisted Suicide: What a Bioethicist/Neuroscientist Says
Andrew H. Peterson
Institute for Philosophy and Policy
George Mason University
"Ethical analyses of physician-assisted suicide often begin and end with claims about the intrinsic value of human life. But, if the practice were legalized, this is only the beginning of the ethical story. Several difficult problems follow: To whom should the practice be made available? And what safeguards should be put in place to protect vulnerable patients? Many of the most interesting and provocative ethical problems regarding physician-assisted suicide turn on whether a patient is ever of the right mindset to make such a request. This is particularly important if the state considers allowing minors and individuals with psychiatric conditions to participate."
Peterson studies the intersection of science and philosophy, with a concentration on ethical treatment of those with disorders of consciousness.

Reducing the Effect of Daylight Saving Time
Richard Shane, Ph.D.
Founder
Sleep Easily, LLC
Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, Nov. 6. Switching the clock can upset people's sleep cycles, both with the physical change and anxiety about the time change. A sleep expert and psychotherapist with over 20 years' experience in a clinical setting, Dr. Shane can offer suggestions on how to better adapt to the time change: "Changing the clocks can upset sleep cycles in both physical and emotional ways. There are simple things you can do to reduce the effect. One week before the Daylight Saving Time change, go to bed 15 minutes later. Every two days after, go to bed an additional 15 minutes later. This will gradually shift your sleep rhythms."
Based in Boulder, Colo., Dr. Shane is the author of "The Sleep Easily Method Sleepguide." He is available for comment on a variety of sleep topics.

November is Prematurity Awareness Month
Kelli Kelley
Executive Director and Founder
Hand to Hold
"A recent article written by healthcare providers who had personal NICU experiences with their children and grandchildren highlights the positive family transformations that often occur after a NICU stay. But the authors are careful to note they chose to reflect on the positive changes in their lives as transformations rather than post-traumatic growth. Rather than grow, they felt they were stronger, yet more vulnerable after going through the experience of prematurity, babies born with devastating diagnosis and loss. Some of the life lessons shared in the article include gratitude for the gift of life, forgiveness, learning not to sweat the small stuff, respecting the fact that some things are simply out of our control, humility and resilience. But before we can even think about what positive things may result from our difficult and traumatic birth experience, we must first grieve what we have lost."
Kelley is the founder and executive director of Hand to Hold, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing education and support to families who have had children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or the loss of a baby. A visionary leader and skilled communicator, Kelley uses her time and talents to raise awareness about the high incidence of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder among these parents and the long-term implications for their families. A passionate parent advocate and NICU parent herself, she serves on numerous advisory committees to represent the voice of NICU parents and frequently speaks at healthcare conferences to share how medical professionals can better care for NICU families and improve long-term outcomes.

Health Benefits of Antioxidants
Joe Alton, M.D.
Disaster Preparedness Expert
"Keeping healthy and fighting disease is what your body's immune system is all about. What does your body use as weapons in the arsenal to stave off the toxins you're exposed to every day? Antioxidants. How do they work? Antioxidants donate electrons to these free radicals, rendering them harmless, without becoming free radicals themselves. They serve to defend your cells from damage and resist the effects of exposure to pollutants and other toxins. Other important possible benefits of antioxidants include: assisting in cell repair, processing toxic elements like mercury and arsenic out of your body, increasing your body's natural defense capabilities by shielding your DNA from free radical attacks, and promoting the self-destruction of early cancer cells."
Dr. Alton is available to discuss foods that are high in antioxidants, including vegetables, fruit, nuts, green tea, herbs and spices, and sprouts. He is a disaster preparedness expert, member of the Wilderness Medical Society, and New York Times/Amazon bestselling author of "The Survival Medicine Handbook: The Essential Guide for When Medical Help is Not on the Way" and other books, including the just-released and timely "The Zika Virus Handbook." He is a well-known speaker and host of "The Doom and Bloom Survival Medicine Hour" syndicated podcast.

Wine and Food Pairings
Chef Johnny Logan
Wine Enthusiast and Culinary Instructor
The Art Institute of Washington
What makes wine selections even more special are the delectable dishes paired next to them. Based in Arlington, Va., Logan can share recommendations for food and wine lovers: "When what you drink melds with what you're eating, something magical takes place in your mouth, in terms of sheer sensory experience. The success of any pairing is measured by what happens when a sip of the wine you're drinking interacts on your palate with the bit of food you're drinking interacts on your palate with the bite of food you've just eaten."
