EXPERT ALERTS:
How to Choose a Safe, High-Quality Dietary Supplement
Dan Lifton
CEO
Quality of Life Labs
"Choosing safe and effective dietary supplements has become a game of chance. While there are many nutritional supplements on health-food store shelves and online, the dizzying array of choices has become confusing for many American consumers. With food-safety disasters regularly in the headlines and consumer confidence in food products strained to the limits, helping consumers navigate through this nutritional roulette wheel of food supplement products has become more important today than perhaps ever before. And helping them identify high-quality dietary supplements whose ingredients are backed by published, human clinical studies has become an important mission."
As CEO of Quality of Life Labs, Lifton, a top natural products industry expert, has led the development and marketing of two product lines of clinically proven nutritional supplements, one a retail line that is sold through health food stores and the other sold directly to healthcare professionals. He managed the complete re-branding of both lines, launched 30 new formulas and completed two acquisitions, one in oral care and another in the functional food business. As President of Maypro's Proprietary Branded Ingredients Group, Lifton established and leads Maypro's rapidly growing business focused on the sales and marketing of unique patented nutraceutical ingredients. He signed distribution deals for more than 10 proprietary products, managed the in-licensing of a new platform technology, and has led four successfully completed M&A transactions. He is based in Purchase, N.Y., and is fluent in Russian, French and Spanish.

Using an Integrated Network of Health Practitioners to Manage Athletes' Health
Dr. Naresh Rao, DO, FAOASM
Sports Medicine Specialist and Primary Care Physician
Sports Medicine at Chelsea
"The notion that physicians only treat pain and illness is archaic. Athletes now rely on an integrated network of healthcare practitioners working together to manage their physical, mental and emotional well-being throughout the training lifecycle -- from prehab to post-competition recovery."
Dr. Rao is the author of "Step up Your Game: The Revolutionary Program Elite Athletes Use to Increase Performance and Achieve Total Health" (Sports Publishing, February 2016), a book on sports performance for the everyday athlete. He has also been a contributing author for several medical books and articles for scientific journals, and lectures frequently on sports medicine and wellness-related topics. He is available to discuss concussions, manipulative treatment, Zika, preventive care, sports performance, and water polo.
Dr. Rao is board certified in family medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment, and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in sports medicine. He currently serves as head team physician for Men's USA Water Polo, as well as medical liaison to the US Olympic Committee. He serves on the Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee for the World Triathlon Corporation (Ironman, International). He most recently served as a sports physician for Team USA at the 2015 Pan American Games. He has been selected to the Sports Medicine team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is currently serving as clinical assistant professor at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as clinical faculty at NYU School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Beth Israel Family Medicine Residency, and Northwell Plainview Hospital Sports Medicine Fellowship. He is a competitive tennis player and played water polo at Colgate University. His love for sports thoroughly pervades his professional and personal life. He is a swimming and water polo coach for the New York Athletic Club's Saturday Morning Program.

Talcum Powder Now Linked to Ovarian Cancer
Eileen Kroll
Attorney and Registered Nurse
Cochran, Kroll and Associates
For decades, women have been using talcum powder products. However, evidence presented in lawsuits against major manufacturers of talcum powder shows that the talc powder used in these products can enter the body through the vagina and travel to the ovaries. In February 2016, a jury in St. Louis, Mo., awarded $72 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products for feminine hygiene. In May 2016, a jury in St. Louis, Mo., awarded $55 million to a woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products for feminine hygiene for approximately 40 years. "Evidence presented at these two trials shows there is an association between an increased risk of ovarian cancer and use of talc products for feminine hygiene. The public needs to be made aware of these developments."

Ulcerative Colitis: Tips for Living with and Managing Your UC
Patricia Raymond, M.D.
Board Certified Gastroenterologist
Ulcerative colitis affects 1 in every 1,000 Americans, who are often diagnosed before age 30, and can make carrying out the simplest of activities, like going to work or the grocery store, extremely difficult, if not impossible. Leading the way in the dietary management of ulcerative colitis, VSL#3 DS, a high-potency probiotic medical food may help maintain remission when added to traditional therapies.
Says Dr. Raymond: "While probiotics have gained widespread recognition for their general intestinal health, when it comes to managing a serious digestive issue like UC, a probiotic should be chosen based upon the desired outcome for specific health conditions. If you have UC, you need to be aware that whatever you do to manage the inflammation, you need to keep it up. Ulcerative colitis fares better with ongoing maintenance, rather than rescue treatment of active periods (also known as flares). So, continue your treatment and no slacking off, whether medications, a probiotic, dietary changes, and/or exercise. Learning how to successfully manage UC can make all the difference."
Dr. Raymond, an advocate for VSL#3, a leader in the probiotic medical food category, is available for interview to offer tips on how to manage UC successfully and discuss the risks for not properly managing it.

Things to Keep in Mind When Considering a Moving Company
Wes Taft
Co-Founder
moveCHECK
"Moving is a life stage that everyone goes through at some point in their life. It can be a disorganized and stressful event, but it doesn't need to be. I made the mistake of hiring 'cheap movers' one time and will not make that mistake again. One mover, who was clearly no professional, dropped my TV after trying to carry it himself on his shoulder. Of course, I did not have any recourse to replace it, as they did not have any insurance. If you decide you have too much stuff to move yourself, there are a few things you should keep in mind when considering a moving company."
Taft, co-founder of moveCHECK, a mobile app designed to save time and stress during a move, can offer tips to consider when preparing to relocate. Having moved 10 times in 10 years, Taft has experienced plenty of stress while moving. After watching his prized TV get dropped and shattered from the back of a moving truck, he vowed to never use cheap moving companies again. He now dedicates his over 20+ years of marketing and technology experience to moveCHECK's mission to "make moving less miserable." It was because of these reasons that he helped found moveCHECK, an app that connects users to local vendors and creates a task list to help ease the moving process. Taft can speak thoroughly on steps to take before or during the moving process, give different tips or hacks to ease moving, tell users how to go about finding the best movers/storage spaces and give tips on various hardships while moving like moving with a family, moving with pets or moving on a budget.

Nanny Check: Three Practical Tips to Make Sure Your Children Are Safe
Florence Ann Romano
The Windy City Nanny
Nanny check does not always have to be a hairy experience. A combination of expert questioning and a common-sense approach to nanny check can go a long way in ensuring children's safety. Romano offers these three tips: "1) Presence in social media may help give a good perspective on someone. People often give a good indication of their personality, psychology and even their values by what is on social media. Parents should look not so much at what is posted, but by what these posts signify. The what, when, why, how, and how often of social media activity may hold vital clues. 2) Maintain at least one reliable professional background investigation service. Even when a nanny is being supplied by a professional agency, parents should still call on their own investigation service to verify nanny information. 3) Children are often the best indicators. Pay close attention to what children say and do. Spend time to carefully conduct random check and questions regularly."
Romano is a dedicated philanthropist and former nanny who has always had a special place in her heart for children. Born and raised just outside Chicago, Romano earned a degree in performance theater at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. She started caring for kids before she was a teenager and worked for more than 15 years as a nanny. She shares her experiences in "Nanny and Me," her first book for children and their parents (Mascot Books, May 2015).

- THE ART OF RISK: HOW SMART RISK-TAKING CAN IMPROVE YOUR LIFE. "Risk" can be a scary word for many, but taking a risk, as frightening as it might be, can open you up to new opportunities, better decisions and, perhaps, a more fulfilling career. We recently talked about risk-taking with Kayt Sukel, author of "The Art of Risk: The New Science of Courage, Caution & Chance." In the book, Sukel interviews scientists, extreme athletes, an entrepreneur, an Army Special Forces operator, and a neurosurgeon, among others, to learn more about how they look at the world -- and how they make risk work for them: http://prn.to/1R8yNC6
