EXPERT ALERTS:
Disaster Planning for Businesses
Dave Lockhart
Senior Consultant
TayganPoint Consulting Company
Hurricane Matthew reminded businesses that they have to plan for disasters ahead of time. As much of the Southeast begins to recover, Lockhart can speak to how businesses do this, and what plans they should have in place going forward: "Business continuity is being able to restore operations in another location if the business goes down. For example, if IT is only thinking about recovery and not about business continuity scenarios, and if the business leadership team is thinking only about physical recovery and not the IT services, then you don't have the recovery of the business."
Lockhart has 35 years of leadership experience directing and facilitating the design, development and communication of business aligned corporate IT strategy. Focus areas include: IT service strategy, DR strategy, IT managed service strategy and network services strategy. Industries include: pharma, retail, technology and manufacturing. He is based in Washington Crossing, Pa.

How to Use Improv Comedy Skills to Become a Better Teammate in the Office
Dave Collins
CEO
Oak and Reeds
"Improvisation is a skill practiced by everyone, every single day. As much as we would like to rehearse and practice our lines for critical moments, there's no script sitting on our desk each morning, outlining all the things we'll say and do throughout the day."
Collins' work uses the improv comedy toolset as a way to solve common organizational challenges in creative ways. His workshops introduce skills for public speaking, leading teams, and enhancing team collaboration. Applications include preparing hiring managers to ask great questions in interviews, empowering young leaders with active listening skills and team building workshops for high-performing teams looking to apply new collaboration tools to their everyday work. Overall, he works to enhance individual and group collaboration skills, creativity and build stronger, more empathetic teams. He is based in San Francisco.

More Lifesaving Valves to Stop Gas Leaks Will Be Required in 2017
Tom Carse
Attorney
Carse Law Firm in Dallas
Starting next year, the federal government will require that all new or replaced gas lines for hundreds of thousands of apartments and small businesses across the U.S. must be equipped with special valves that can shut off gas automatically when a line is ruptured. The government's announcement expands the mandatory installation of excess flow valves beyond new single-family homes. The valves, priced at around $30, don't prevent gas lines from being ruptured, such as when a backhoe accidentally hits one. But by limiting the amount of gas that escapes, federal regulators say the valves can prevent a buildup of fuel that can contribute to explosions or fires.
Says Carse: "These simple and inexpensive devices can save dozens of lives and millions of dollars in property damage each year. But gas companies, contractors and consumers need to understand how and where the valves should be located. Otherwise the devices will provide very little or no protection." Earlier this year, Carse filed suit against a natural gas company on behalf of residents who were injured and their homes destroyed or damaged as the result of a 2015 gas explosion, claiming negligence in the location and installation of excess flow valves.
