The higher path of the spirit is to be at peace with the universe and with all our fellow beings. None of us are perfect, and we all have reasons for acting the way we do. 5) Don't forget to go easy on yourself. How many times have you chastised yourself for making a poor decision, lashing out at others, being clumsy, or running late for a meeting? Most mistakes we make won't affect us in the long run. In fact, by recognizing the value in our own folly, we can learn some of life's most valuable lessons! 6) Choose positive emotions. You are the pilot of your own course in life, and you can choose to make intelligent and balanced decisions. When you find yourself automatically being guided toward the emotion of anger, for example, wait a few seconds and ask yourself if it would better serve you to change course. The ability to choose more positive emotions is something all of us have, but it's like a muscle that needs regular exercise in order to serve us best. 7) Release emotional baggage. You can lower your stress level by getting clear on the underlying causes of negative emotional choices and nagging, negative thoughts."

5 Tips for Navigating Negative Interactions

Dr. Jain can offer five tips to navigate negative interactions: "1) Acknowledge and make peace with your feelings: The first thing to do is to acknowledge and make peace with the negative feelings that you are feeling, and breathe through them so that you don't escalate the negativity. Stay grounded in your body and just breathe, feeling your feet on the ground until your negative feelings aren't overwhelming you. 2) Talk through your feelings: If you feel comfortable, talk through your feelings with the person. Be sure to focus on *your* feelings, not accuse the other person. For example, consider saying something like, 'I've worked really hard on this project, but when I hear you talk about my work, it sounds really critical to me and that makes me feel upset,' versus 'You are constantly criticizing me and my work and making me angry.' 3) Give yourself some space: "If you don't feel comfortable talking about the situation with the person, the best thing to do is to take space from that person until you feel that you can have a conversation about the issue. 4) Embrace silence, get grounded, and breathe: If neither talking through things nor taking space is possible, the best thing is to stay in the situation silently and breathe through your discomfort by staying grounded in your body until you can take space. If you engage back with negativity, you're just feeding the negative cycle and that won't help you or the situation long-term. 5) Cultivate compassion: Also consider that people who are in pain and who are depressed may have more negative thinking and negative behaviors, and sometimes their negative self-talk extends out to others in forms of rude comments or behavior. If you encounter negative talk or behavior like this, you can take time to consider what this 'negative person' might be going through in his or her life, and see if you can cultivate some compassion for that person. It will help you deal more effectively with the negativity that is present."
Dr. Jain is a psychologist, scientist, and social entrepreneur.
