Can Monogamy Actually Increase the Risk of HIV Infection?
Joye Swan, Ph.D.
Psychology Chair, School of Media, Culture and Design
Woodbury University
Dr. Swan is available to discuss whether monogamy can increase the risk of infection from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases: "If individuals define a relationship as monogamous, even when it is not, and then use the perceived safety of monogamy to forego condom use, monogamy could actually increase an individual's risk of HIV infection and thus, could be seen as a potential HIV risk factor. The research is quite profound and certainly flies in the face of convention. The important message is that monogamy, as practiced in the real world, could increase risk of HIV or other STI infection."
Dr. Swan, who holds a Ph.D. in Applied Social Psychology from Claremont Graduate University, has focused her research on sexual risk-taking in intimate relationships and sexual identity. She has been actively researching intimate relationships for more than 20 years. With shows like "Married at First Sight" contributing to the discourse in popular culture, Dr. Swan's expertise in intimate relationships is both timely and especially relevant. In addition to her latest study, "Monogamy, The Protective Fallacy: Sexual Versus Emotional Exclusivity and the Implications for Sexual Health Risk," Dr. Swan's recent research includes "Heterosexuals Do It With Feeling: Heterocentrism in College Students' Definitions of Female Heterosexuality and Bisexuality," published in The Journal of Bisexuality. She has also published groundbreaking research on the informed consent process in human subjects research, which found that signing an informed consent form actually represents a subtle type of psychological coercion for research participants.

Why Are We Ignoring the Role of the Food Industry in Healthcare Reform?
Dr. Elaina George
Board Certified Otolaryngologist
"The number of obese people has more than doubled since 1980. When you take into account the number of diseases like breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes and osteoarthritis, to name a few, that are linked to obesity, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the link between healthcare costs and obesity is strong, and changes can go a long way to both bringing down the costs and helping us live longer healthier lives. I applaud the First Lady's efforts to increase awareness of obesity. I agree that exercise and increasing fresh fruits and vegetables in our diet are important. We definitely don't exercise enough and we eat way too much fast food. Schools should offer physical education. However, this effort doesn't go far enough because it is window dressing designed to make us feel like something is being done. Unfortunately, it does not address the elephant in the room that no one is talking about -- the food industry. Over the past two decades, we have gotten fatter and sicker, but there has been another change. Our food, by and large, is no longer produced by the small farmer. Corporate farming has taken over our food supply. Farms have gotten larger, and techniques to increase the amount of food while making it cheaper and produced more quickly have been the goal of the food industry. The argument can be made that the changes in the way our food is produced has had a direct correlation with the rise in obesity, diabetes, heart disease and the ever-increasing cancer rate. In addition, it can also be argued that government policies have empowered the food industry to adopt policies that are making us sick."
Dr. George is a board-certified otolaryngologist. She graduated from Princeton University with a degree in biology. She received her master's degree in medical microbiology from Long Island University, and received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Dr. George completed her residency at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. She is on the advisory council of Project 21 black leadership network, an initiative of The National Center for Public Policy Research. She hosts her own radio show, "Medicine On Call," and she is also a keynote speaker many organizations.

Should You Hire a Manny?
Florence Ann Romano
The Windy City Nanny
Romano shares these pros and cons to hiring a manny: Pros: "Hiring a manny gives you the opportunity to provide your children with a consistent male role model -- a figure that may be missing in their lives. Regardless of the current men in your children's life, a manny will be a great alternative to an older brother figure for your children, particularly if you have a son. Also, male nannies tend to use a more active approach to childcare, making them more inclined to take your kids on exciting adventures, to play rough with them, etc." Con: "Fewer males pursue a career in childcare, which makes your job harder in terms of finding a manny who matches with your family and your needs."
Romano is a dedicated philanthropist and former nanny who has always had a special place in her heart for children. She worked for over 15 years as a nanny, and shares her experiences in "Nanny and Me" (Mascot Books, May 2015), her debut book for children making the transition from being cared for solely by their parents to having a nanny in their home. Born and raised just outside Chicago, Romano earned a degree in performance theatre at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. She is the owner of Trinity, LLC, a 100% woman-owned and new family company that runs the Original Six Media production company and the online publication TheSixThirty.com. She also serves as president and founder of a junior board for young professionals that supports autism awareness for children and adults.
