EXPERT ALERTS:
Airline Scheduling and Holiday Travel
Tamas Terlaky
Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering
Lehigh University
Terlaky is available to share expert commentary regarding software scheduling modules related to the American Airlines pilot scheduling snafu, which may cause frustrating flight cancellations and delays for holiday travelers this year. Dr. Terlaky shares these thoughts on the pilot scheduling situation: "I was stunned to hear that such a problem can happen today. The airline crew scheduling problem is a classic problem, similar to the model and methodology we developed and used for the inmate assignment problem. It was pioneered in the 1980s and today all airlines are using, and relying on, such sophisticated scheduling optimization systems. Looking at the news, it seems to be quite clear that this major disruption is caused by some quite simple software bug. Based on how the problem is described in news reports, this is the picture: A software module, unchecked, allowed the pilots to schedule days off for the holiday season, and drop scheduled flights without putting a replacement pilot in the system. As Dennis Tajer, an American Airlines captain and a spokesman for the pilot's union, said, the software 'became Santa Claus for everyone,' allowing all pilots to take holiday as they wanted and drop assigned flights without checking the availability of a substitute pilot. Just to illustrate: Your banking software allows you to move the pay day of your mortgage or credit card shifted within a short time window (like from the 15th day of the month to the 3rd). This error is like your banking system without any penalty would allow you (and everyone) to take a half year pay holiday unchecked. In a sophisticated software system, this looks like a simple bug, and most probably the error was detected by the crew 'plane-pilot-route' scheduling module (the mathematical optimization module), which could not find any feasible pilot assignment schedule; simply there were not enough pilots (as most booked on to go on holiday)."
Terlaky is an expert in optimization methods and software, particularly for complex scheduling challenges. He and his research team recently won the international Wagner Prize for their work creating a scheduling optimization model for assigning inmates to correctional institutions that was recently adopted by the state of Pennsylvania.

Building a Safe and Effective Leg Workout: Leg Day or Total Body?
Jonathan Jordan
Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach and Fitness Blogger
Jonathan Jordan Fitness
Based in San Francisco, Jordan is available to discuss how to build the best leg workout for your body, including which exercises to select; how to choose the appropriate weight, reps and sets for your goals; and how to progress your program so you don't plateau: "I love leg day. As someone who has struggled with his weight and suffered through back injuries, having strong legs and executing powerful squats and deadlifts makes me feel good and working the big muscles of the lower body keeps me lean. But I get that a lot of folks dread leg day. The best way to make sure you are getting the most out of your leg workouts is to build and follow a sound program that includes a good warm-up/mobility work, all your major movement patterns, load variety (weight placement and modality) and some lateral/transverse movements for optimal joint health."
Adds Jordan: "The gold standard in weightlifting used to be the split routine (i.e., focusing each day on one body part/area, like 'chest day,' 'leg day,' etc.). That still works for a lot of people, and research suggests it's effective. Increasingly popular is the practice of doing total body workouts on all of your gym days (usually in super sets), which minimizes rest times. Research and common sense suggest this can be equally or more effective for today's average gym-goer."

Practical Tips to Avoid a New Year's Day Hangover
Jonathan Glass, L.Ac., M.Ac., CHT
Ayurvedic Practitioner
"New Year's Day may be the day of the year when you're most likely to suffer from a hangover -- fatigue, nausea, stomach pain, headaches, shakiness, vomiting, dizziness, and more -- that occurs when you've had too much to drink. The best way to prevent a hangover, of course, is to avoid drinking. However, if you do intend to drink, there are some natural remedies that may help you to avoid hangover symptoms altogether: 1) Stay hydrated: Drink a glass of water along with each alcoholic beverage to help prevent dehydration. At bedtime, drink another large glass of water or two to help stave off hangover symptoms in the morning. 2) Eat before and during: If your stomach is empty, it will speed the alcohol's rate of absorption into your body. It may also cause more severe stomach irritation. Make it a point to eat a meal before you drink alcohol and nibble on satisfying snacks (such as cheese) while you drink. 3) Replenish electrolytes: Try drinking and electrolyte drink or coconut water before you go to bed to help reduce hangover symptoms in the morning. 4) Stick with clear alcohol: Generally, clear liquors (vodka, gin, white wine) will contain fewer congeners than darker varieties (brandy, whiskey). 4) Stop drinking when you're buzzed: When you feel buzzed, it's a sign that your body's detoxification pathways are becoming overwhelmed. Take a break from drinking, or quit for the day entirely, to allow your body to metabolize the alcohol effectively."
Glass is a Licensed Master Acupuncturist, Ayurvedic Practitioner, Reconnective Healer, Energy Healer, Certified Hypnotherapist, Herbalist, Muscle Response Tester and Natural Health Educator. He is on the faculty of The Dharma Institute of Yoga and Ayurveda and has served on the faculty of the New England School of Acupuncture. He presently teaches at numerous yoga schools locally and throughout the U.S. His new book, "Total Life Cleanse: A 28-Day Program to Detoxify and Nourish the Body, Mind, and Soul," will be available Jan. 30, 2018.

This New Year, Boost Productivity by Beating Blind Spots
Josselyne Herman-Saccio
Seminar Leader
Landmark
"Blind spots occur based on our view of reality. Our beliefs and stories about reality shape our actions and non-actions. This new year, ask yourself: What do you believe is blocking you from achieving your ultimate goals? What are your reasons? Once you identify your reasons, you can then acknowledge them as reasons and begin to step outside of them. Don't try to debate your reasons. Don't try to evaluate your reasons. Don't try to talk yourself in or out of your reasons. Simply let the reasons be there, then step outside of them. Realize that your performance has nothing to do with your reasons."
Herman-Saccio is a communication expert with Landmark, a personal and professional growth, training and development company that's had more than 2.4 million people use its programs to cause breakthroughs in their personal lives, as well as in their communities, generating more than 100,000 community projects around the world. In The Landmark Forum, Landmark's flagship program, people cause breakthroughs in their performance, communication, relationships and overall satisfaction in life.

Holiday Tips for Dealing with Difficult Family
David Cunningham, M.Ed.
Seminar Leader
Landmark
"Remember, the way other people treat you or treated you in the past does not determine your self-worth. Distinguish who you are at the core of your being from your experiences, and live in that 'domain of being.' You can also try out these tips: 1) Let go of old stories about who family members are. 2) Express gratitude. 3) Listen powerfully and don't personalize hurtful remarks."

Unmasking What Matters
Sandra Joseph
Author
"Living a meaningful, satisfying life is an enigma for most people today. We live in a culture that puts too much emphasis on 'the climb' and many of us end up feeling stuck, small and without the self-confidence to move in the direction of what we really want. Or, if we do muscle through our fear in pursuit of our dreams, we exhaust ourselves working and striving and achieving. Somehow, no matter our level of outer-world success, we are left dazed and disheartened asking ourselves, 'Is this all there is?' One thing for sure: the only way to have a truly fulfilling life and achieve success that satisfies is to recognize that the journey up is no substitute for the journey in."
Joseph holds the record for the longest-running leading lady in the longest-running Broadway show of all time, spending nearly a decade playing Christine Daaé in "The Phantom of the Opera." Today, she is on a mission to empower other people's voices through her work as an author, speaker and workshop facilitator. Joseph has been seen on numerous national broadcasts, including "The Oprah Winfrey Show," CNN, "The Today Show," "Dateline," "The Early Show," "The View" and "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" She also coauthored "Your Creative Soul: Expressing Your Authentic Voice," with five-time New York Times best-selling author Caroline Myss. Joseph's new book, "Unmasking What Matters: 10 Life Lessons from 10 Years on Broadway," launches on Jan. 23, 2018, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of "Phantom." Joseph is married to her "Phantom" costar, actor Ron Bohmer. They live in San Diego.
