New Non-Invasive DNA Colon Cancer Screening Test

"Colon cancer is the third most common cancer and will affect 5 in 100 people over their lifetime. A newly devised stool test (Cologuard) tests for both blood and changes to DNA that are commonly found in patients with colon cancers. This new combination of blood and DNA was able to identify 60 out of 65 patients diagnosed with cancer by colonoscopy (an excellent 92 percent sensitivity of the test).  A positive DNA test might mean that there is a polyp or cancer that can be identified by a direct test such as colonoscopy. However, in 5-10 percent, the DNA stool test was positive, but the colonoscopy did not find any polyps or cancers.  This may be an excellent tool for those patients who are reluctant to participate in colonoscopy screening programs, to see if they might be at higher risk for the development of colon cancer and then decide on more direct methods of testing."
Dr. Swaminath is a gastroenterologist and director of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. His areas of expertise include colorectal cancer screening and prevention, imaging of the small bowel, capsule endoscopy and emerging medical therapies for the treatment of IBD.
