"While the reports and recommendations published by the AHA, CDC and WHO steps in the right direction, more research and regulation is needed for e-cigarettes and other emerging tobacco products, especially with regard to young people. E-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is addictive, and can be a gateway for users to switch to other nicotine products. Kids are lured into believing that e-cigarettes are safer when disguised by creative packaging and popular flavorings, but the reality is that they haven't been tested. What looks cool and attractive can be an illusion, especially to children and teens who are easily impressed. We must be proactive in educating our communities, schools and government about dangers associated with these products."
Prokhorov, M.D., Ph.D., behavioral scientist and youth smoking cessation expert at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, is available to discuss the known and unknown health effects of e-cigarettes and the potential implications of the AHA, CDC, and WHO recommendations on clinical practice.
