The Best Way to Prevent Stroke? Early Education About Risk Factors and Warning Signs
Nerses Sanossian, M.D.
Associate Professor of Neurology, Keck Medicine of USC
Director, Roxanna Todd Hodges Stroke Program
A stroke occurs every 40 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, according to the American Stroke Association. Among Californians, stroke is the third leading cause of death. Fortunately, most strokes can be prevented if people know the risk factors and disability from stroke can be reduced if people know the warning signs that someone is having one, and the importance of calling 911 immediately. Says Sanossian: "We understand that stroke typically impacts individuals later in life, but there usually are a string of causes throughout a person's life that lead to a stroke -- causes that if addressed early on may prevent a stroke from occurring. Educating the next generation about behaviors and factors that increase the likelihood of a stroke or TIA in themselves and others may be the answer to the question: How do we reduce the impact of stroke on our society at large?"
Dr. Sanossian is associate professor of neurology with designation as clinical scholar, director of the division of Neurocritical Care & Stroke, and director of the Roxanna Todd Hodges Comprehensive Stroke Clinic and Transient Ischemic Attack Program of USC. His research interests range from prehospital stroke therapies, imaging of stroke and stroke prevention in underserved populations. He is board certified in neurology, vascular neurology and neurosonology, specializing in the diagnosis and management of ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral vasculitis, stroke genetics, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. He earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, served an internship in internal medicine and a residency in neurology at the Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center in New York, and completed a fellowship in vascular neurology at the UCLA Stroke Center.
Early education is just one of the ways the Roxanna Todd Hodges Foundation and Keck Medicine of USC are helping people avoid stroke. Its S.M.A.R.T. (Students learning about stroke, Making healthy lifestyle choices, Aware of Risk factors and Teaching others that stroke is 80 percent preventable) program teaches school-age youth everything they need to know about stroke and how to avoid one. It's one of several stroke education and prevention efforts offered through the foundation's Comprehensive Stroke Clinic and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) program. In its first year, the S.M.A.R.T. program is on track to educate some 1,500 Southern California young people.

Finding Happiness in a Fractured World
A.K. "Kim" Driggs
Author
"Everyone in life faces challenges. How we find happiness in spite of -- or perhaps because of -- the hand we are dealt is what shows our strengths and our character. As a woman who was abandoned as an infant in a brown paper bag, who struggled to find my place in the world as a child -- and as an adult bisexual woman -- I've found strength in my identity being unique, with a colorful life, including becoming a recording artist and a stint as a phone sex operator. Ultimately, I've found happiness with my wife, with our lives in Hawaii, and in building my successful business marketing naturally based and organic products. And it goes to show that happiness is within our reach, whether as a member of the LGBT community, as a woman building her career, as an adoptee, or as a human inhabitant of the world."
Driggs is available to discuss a wide array of topics that include her approach to finding happiness in a fractured world, challenges associated with marketing naturally-based and organic products in North America, and how her background as an abandoned and subsequently adopted child has shaped her life and world view. She is also happy to discuss any of the aspects of her colorful life. A recipient of Women of Distinction magazine's 2016 Excellence Award as a Distinguished Professional, recently published a memoir, "Abandoned in Search of Rainbows," that recounts her life. She is also president and CEO of Avatar, the oldest sales management company in the U.S. and Canada. Avatar specializes in launching, managing and building the sales of new or existing companies within the "natural products/organic industry, gourmet specialty and mass market." Additionally, Driggs is an LGBT adoptee who has lived an extraordinarily interesting life with colorful experiences as an animal communicator, musical prodigy, phone-sex superstar, recording artist and more.
