EXPERT ALERTS:
Why the Current Proposed Tax Reform Bills Will Fail to Achieve Their Intended Objectives
Harlan Ullman
Chairman
Killowen Group
"These [tax reform] bills will not achieve these objectives for several reasons. The key assumptions and promises are that by cutting corporate tax rates and closing loop holes, the economy will grow at a rate fast enough to generate sufficient revenues to offset the approximately $1.5 trillion in projected budget deficits that will accumulate, and unemployment will be reduced. Sadly, as a combination of history and reality demonstrates, this will not happen. Tax cuts may produce a short-term increase in growth, but to the degree history counts, this has never been sustained. With unemployment at record lows of about 4%, it is difficult to see how that figure will be further reduced. Moreover, there are no guarantees that average wages will rise, and it is almost certain that the deficit and debt will grow. Another assumption is that interest rates will remain low. But what happens when, for example, rates climb to a modest 5%? With a debt of about $20 trillion, interest payment would soar to about $1 trillion and consume roughly 20-25% of the federal budget. It is too late for Congress to reverse course, but if it were to do that, there are three fixes that would actually achieve the aims noted above. While many oppose cutting corporate tax rates to 20%, there is a better alternative. Why not keep the current rate and make dividends tax deductible?"
Based in Washington, D.C., Dr. Ullman chairs The Killowen Group, which advises leaders of government and business at the highest levels. He has served on the Senior Advisory Group for Supreme Allied Commander Europe (2004-2016) and is currently senior advisor at Washington D.C.'s Atlantic Council, chairman of two private companies and principal author of the doctrine of shock and awe. A former naval person, he commanded a destroyer in the Persian Gulf and led over 150 missions and operations in Vietnam as a Swift Boat skipper. The FDA's Double Standard
Tod Cooperman, M.D.
CEO and Founder
PharmacyChecker.com
"There's an outrageous double standard being applied by the FDA that tells Americans that it's categorically dangerous to personally import their prescription medications when so many medications sold here at home are imported but often cost two to five times more."
Based in New York, Dr. Cooperman is a nationally recognized and respected researcher, writer, and speaker on consumer healthcare issues. He has testified on health and nutrition issues before subcommittees of the Senate and House of Representatives and has been an invited lecturer at the National Institutes of Health. In addition to founding PharmacyChecker.com, Dr. Cooperman founded ConsumerLab.com, the leading independent evaluator of dietary supplements (vitamin, mineral, herbal, and non-herbal) and nutrition products. Dr. Cooperman also founded CareData Reports, Inc., an evaluator of consumer satisfaction with managed care (now a division of J.D. Power and Associates). Dr. Cooperman is a graduate of the Boston University School of Medicine and received his B.A. in medical science and economics from Boston University. He is a blogger for the Huffington Post's Healthy Living section.

Is Trump Fundamentally Doubtful of His Own Legitimacy?
Michael Klein, PsyD
Psychologist
MK Insights LLC
"Growing up in a family business or with family wealth can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, opportunities and financial security are plentiful. On the other, you never get to learn that you can make it on your own. When you never have to apply for a job, create a resume, go on a job interview, or succeed on your own, self-doubt can fester and grow. In the case of Trump, his obsession with having others acknowledge his value are a stand-in for his own paralyzing fear and self-doubt."
Klein is the author of "Trapped in the Family Business: A practical guide to understanding and managing this hidden dilemma." He has 20 years of experience consulting to HR professionals, as well as working as one himself.

Americans Rally to Save the Oldest Church in Paris
David Sheppe
Non-Profit Program Leader
American Friends for the Preservation of Saint Germain des Prés
"Every aspect of the church itself is a testament to French culture and history. Unfortunately, it must contend with the ravages of time, and the overall condition of the church has deteriorated steadily throughout the centuries. Together, we can and will breathe new life into this emblematic heritage site."
Sheppe has enjoyed a long career in international banking and now works as a financial and risk management consultant. It was while living in Paris in the 1980s that he first took an interest in the church of Saint Germain des Prés, and he has been a frequent visitor ever since. From 2013 to 2016, he was once again a Paris resident, and it was then that he became acquainted with the work of the "Fonds de Dotation," the Paris-based fundraising arm for renovating the church. Following his return to the U.S. in 2016, Sheppe did volunteer work for the U.S.-based American Friends for the Preservation of Saint Germain des Prés, before joining its board in 2017. He is now leading the charge on the current Adopt A Saint Germain Star Campaign in the United States. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Cornell University, and resides in southwest Connecticut.
