EXPERT ALERTS:
Why This Year's Olympics Should Be Moved or Cancelled
Joe Alton, M.D.
Doom and Bloom
"A letter to the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro to be moved or delayed due to the Zika virus. Rio is in the heart of the current epidemic. Delaying the Olympics is not the answer. It's being held during the 'winter' in Southern Hemisphere Brazil, when mosquitoes might be less active. A delay just places it in warmer seasons when mosquitoes will be out in full force. So add my voice to those calling not to delay, but to cancel or move the Olympics. Here's the question I asked myself: Is it worth sending a half million tourists, not to mention 10,000 athletes, to the epicenter of a raging epidemic for a sporting event? They'll come from 170 different countries, get bitten by mosquitoes carrying Zika in Brazil, and head back home where local mosquitoes could spread the poorly understood virus throughout the world. Is this a certainty? Of course not, but why increase the chance something like that could happen? There are a lot of countries that are underutilizing the expensive venues and athlete housing they built for previous Olympics. Make the event truly global by having it in a number of countries instead of having it be a big public relations campaign for one. To have a massive sporting event in the middle of an epidemic zone is just plain unethical, if not downright crazy."
Alton is a disaster preparedness expert, member of the Wilderness Medical Society, and New York Times/Amazon bestselling author of "The Survival Medicine Handbook" and other books. He has also written the just-released and timely "The Zika Virus Handbook." He is a well-known speaker and host of The Doom and Bloom Survival Medicine Hour syndicated podcast.
