Promoting Healthy Hearts While Providing Nourishing Meals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Feb. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- It is National Heart Health Month, and we are reminded that thousands of Oklahomans are diagnosed each year with hypertension, high cholesterol, and other heart-related diseases and illnesses. To help address this issue, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and Watertree Health have joined forces to offer a free Prescription Discount Card that makes prescriptions more affordable. As an added benefit, every time a person saves using this special Regional Food Bank Prescription Discount Card, Watertree Health makes a donation to the organization.

Lisinopril and Simvastatin are two of the medications regularly prescribed to treat hypertension and high cholesterol, respectively. By using the free Prescription Discount Card, individuals in Oklahoma can save as much as 83 percent off the full retail price for these drugs.

"One in six Oklahomans struggles with hunger every day," said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. "This partnership with Watertree Health is a win-win. By using the Regional Food Bank Prescription Discount Card, Oklahomans are saving money and helping feed their hungry neighbors in central and western Oklahoma. To date, more than 150,000 meals have been provided through this partnership."

The Prescription Discount Card is accepted at over 60,000 pharmacies, covering more than 90 percent of the country, including major chains, such as Homeland, CVS, Walmart and Walgreens. The versatile card can be used by people with a health insurance plan, or by individuals who do not have health coverage. Cardiac, hypothyroid, stomach acid, asthma and migraine medications are among the many commonly prescribed drugs that can be discounted by using the Prescription Discount Card benefitting the Regional Food Bank.
