Queen of Haunts reveals the phobias that make these attractions unforgettable

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Some people fear snakes. Others cannot stand spiders, clowns, tight spaces, or the thought of something lurking just out of sight. For haunted attraction fans, those fears are precisely the point.

Amber Arnett-Bequeaith, known nationally as the Queen of Haunts, is naming 13 "terrorific" haunted attractions that turn common fears into immersive experiences designed to get under visitors' skin.

Amber Arnett-Bequeaith is a longtime haunted attraction producer, industry spokesperson, and the Queen of Haunts. As part of Kansas City's historic West Bottoms haunt tradition, she has helped lead generations of haunted attraction entertainment and has become a recognized voice on the business, creativity, and culture behind America's haunted attractions. With a lifetime in the business of fright, her influence spans far and wide, inspiring countless others to embrace their fears.

She acknowledges that her list comes with a hometown bias.

"I'll confess right up front: Edge of Hell and The Beast are always going to be at the top of my list because Kansas City is my domain," said Arnett-Bequeaith. "But being the Queen of Haunts means more than championing my home turf. I know what goes into creating a great haunt, from the storytelling and set design to the timing of a scare and the psychology of what makes people afraid. I look at how an attraction makes you feel, what stays with you afterward and how it turns a familiar fear into an unforgettable experience."

Arnett-Bequeaith brings an insider's perspective to haunted entertainment through her work with her family's Full Moon Productions, which created Edge of Hell and Beast Haunted Attractions in Kansas City's historic West Bottoms. Her experience spans the evolution of haunts from traditional walk-through scares to elaborate, immersive productions that combine theatrical storytelling, detailed environments, special effects, and interactive encounters.

The granddaddy of haunts knows how to push the fear buttons

At the top of her list is Edge of Hell, which opened in 1975 and is celebrating its 52nd season in 2026. Recognized as the oldest continuously operated haunted attraction in the United States, it earned its granddaddy status by delivering a gauntlet of fears under one roof.

The experience takes guests through pitch-black caves and tight passages, past snakes and rats, and toward a devilish destination. The five-story slide from heaven to hell adds a fear of heights to the journey, while the attraction's creatures and dark imagery tap into primal fears of the unknown, death, and what might be waiting in the darkness.

For visitors with multiple fears, it is an especially ambitious lineup: claustrophobia, the fear of confined spaces; ophidiophobia, the fear of snakes; musophobia, the fear of mice and rats; entomophobia, the fear of insects; acrophobia, and the fear of heights to name many of the fears leveraged.

"Edge of Hell doesn't rely on just one kind of scare," Arnett-Bequeaith said. "It keeps changing the experience. You might be uncomfortable in a tight, dark passage, nervous about what is moving nearby, or wondering what is waiting around the next corner. Then you find yourself heading toward a five-story plunge. That combination is what makes a haunt memorable."

Just blocks away, Beast offers a different kind of fear. Its sprawling, multi-level environment takes visitors through elaborate worlds inspired by dark history and horror, including a Werewolf Forest, with twists, dead ends, creatures, and surprises that disorient thrillseekers and getting lost is part o the fear. The attraction's open-format design makes uncertainty part of the experience.

Together, the two Kansas City landmarks demonstrate how different approaches to fear can keep haunted entertainment compelling, even for experienced haunt fans.

      The Queen's 13 terrorific picks

Beyond Kansas City, Arnett-Bequeaith recognizes 12 additional attractions for the particular fear triggers that make them stand out. Her selections feature haunts and a phobia that is well executed at the haunt.

      1. Edge of Hell and Beast  — Kansas City, Missouri
Ophidiophobia, fear of snakes and Mazeophobia, the fear of getting lost.

The Kansas City home-team favorites. Edge of Hell delivers a concentrated gauntlet of phobias as its theme covers all the top frights but given its massive snakes, Ophidiophobia, the fear of snakes is often thrillseekers' top fear. Beast's features the phobia, Mazeophobia, the fear of getting lost, through its expansive, twisting environments and Werewolf Forest.
      2. Thrillvania Haunted House Park — Dallas, Texas.
        Coulrophobia, the fear of clowns.
Cassandra's House of Clowns puts this familiar fear front and center, making it a natural pick for anyone whose idea of a nightmare involves a sinister smile and a painted face.
      3. Nightmare on 13th — Salt Lake City, Utah.
Pediophobia, the fear of dolls and mannequins.
The doll room (often encountered as part of a childhood nightmare, bedroom, or twisted nursery scene) is widely regarded as one of the most unsettling, atmosphere-heavy areas of the main walkthrough.
      4. Factory of Terror — Canton, Ohio.
Nosocomephobia, the fear of asylums and medical horror.
The Forsaken Asylum of Dr. Morbidius gives visitors a disturbed institutional setting, plus the attraction's four themed experiences and mile-plus layout keep the tension building.
      5. The Bates Motel and Haunted Attractions — Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, in the Philadelphia metro area.
Scopophobia, the fear of being watched.
The Revenge of the Scarecrows Haunted Corn Trail sends guests through tall corn, where the rustling stalks, obstructed sightlines, and the feeling that something is tracking their movements can make every turn unsettling.
      6. Spooky World Presents Nightmare New England — Litchfield, New Hampshire, in the greater Boston region.
        Arachnophobia, the fear of spiders.
The haunted hayride includes spider-infested campsite scenes, bringing a common fear into the darkness of the woods. The attraction's clowns and chainsaws are part of its top notch scare repertoire.
      7. Erebus Haunted Attraction — Pontiac, Michigan, in metro Detroit.
Claustrophobia, the fear of tight spaces.
Erebus challenges visitors to navigate a massive indoor attraction filled with surprises. Its half-mile-plus journey is an invitation to surrender control and discover what is waiting next.
      8. The Dent Schoolhouse — Cincinnati, Ohio.
Scolionophobia, the fear of school events. Dent is themed around the schoolhouse's dark history, and each room leans into the anxiety of old school memories, and mixed with this school's murderous janitor the basement scenes and dark catacombs are terrifying.
      9. NETHERWORLD Haunted House — Stone Mountain, Georgia, in metro Atlanta.
Teraphobia, the fear of monstrous, otherworldly creatures.
NETHERWORLD is known for elaborate fantasy-horror environments and creatures that push beyond everyday reality, making the fear of the unfamiliar central to the experience.
      10. The Dead End Hayride — Wyoming, Minnesota, in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.
Hylophobiahe, the fear of what lurks in the woods.
The journey combines a hayride with elaborate outdoor scenes and a walk-through experience. Darkness, distance from familiar surroundings and the anticipation of the next encounter make the landscape part of the scare.
      11. Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted Attractions — Ulster Park, New York, in the Hudson Valley.
        Zoophobia the fear of animals.
Headless Horseman indeed has a horse ridden by the Headless Horseman and even a possessed pig. They give good reason to fear these animals, and add to the thrill of the attraction.
      12. The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park — San Diego, California.
Diokophobia, the fear of being pursued in the dark.

The outdoor attraction combines a 3,500-square-foot maze with a mile-long trail through the park's trees. With scares coming from unexpected directions, visitors cannot always anticipate where the next threat will appear.
      13. Talon Falls Screampark — Western Kentucky.
Agnostophobia, the fear of the unpredictable.
The attraction's wooded Blood Creek Haunted Hayride and other immersive environments take visitors through dark, unsettling settings where the next encounter is hidden from view. Its themes include a haunted house, a psych ward, a voodoo lagoon and a 3D ice cream factory.

"Fear is personal," Arnett-Bequeaith said. "One person may be fine with a monster but terrified of a spider. Someone else might laugh at a clown and panic when the lights go out. The best haunted attractions understand that there isn't just one way to scare people. They build an experience that keeps challenging what guests think they can handle."

For the Queen of Haunts, the lasting appeal of these attractions lies in their ability to turn familiar fears into shared experiences. The screams may be different, but the anticipation, adrenaline, and laughter afterward are part of what keeps fans coming back.

"That's the magic of a great haunt," she said. "You know you're there to be scared, but you never know exactly how it's going to happen."
