Raytheon Releases 2009 Corporate Responsibility Report

WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 3, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has issued the company's 2009 Corporate Responsibility Report. The report outlines Raytheon's progress and milestones in the areas of corporate governance; ethics; Engineering, Technology and Mission Assurance; diversity; safety and wellness; energy and the environment; information technology; and community support.

Highlights from the 2009 Corporate Responsibility Report include:

• Governance: Raytheon expanded its contemporary governance practices that drive independence, accountability and transparency. For example, new guidelines were implemented in 2009 to ensure directors and executive officers maintain a financial stake in the company and promote alignment with shareholder interests.
• Ethics Education: Raytheon is committed to fostering an ethical business culture and delivering innovative programs that keep ethics front-of-mind. In 2009, Raytheon introduced the "Ethics Checkpoint" decision-making tool for employees. In addition, Raytheon was honored with a Silver Telly Award, Bronze Telly Award and New York Film Festival Award for various components of EthicSpace, a series of ethics-related video vignettes.
• Engineering, Technology and Mission Assurance: ET&MA creates technology innovations that support our customers globally. This organization delivered a broad array of solutions in 2009, ranging from the Global Broadcast Service (GBS) for high-speed multimedia broadcasts to security systems for the Indianapolis 500 to new environmental solutions.
• Diversity: Raytheon maintains an inclusive business culture and promotes new approaches to fostering diversity companywide. For example, in 2009, Raytheon's enterprise diversity summit model expanded to include a series of regional diversity summits that directly engaged 2,400 employees. In addition, Raytheon's supplier diversity programs were recognized with a host of awards throughout 2009.
• Safety and Wellness: Raytheon maintains a focus on the safety and wellness of our employees globally. To that end, six Raytheon sites achieved OSHA Voluntary Protection Program certification in 2009. Raytheon Chairman and CEO William H. Swanson also led a Strategic Safety Dialogue that enabled 50 company leaders to share best practices for improving safety performance. In addition, the company's Mission: Health employee health engagement program was extended to include employee health screenings.
• Energy and the Environment: Sustainability is a central component of Raytheon's corporate responsibility program. These efforts include energy management; in 2009 Raytheon reduced energy consumption by 3 percent on an absolute basis compared with 2008. The company also earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) 2010 ENERGY STAR Award for Sustained Excellence in Energy Management. Raytheon also advanced efforts to prevent pollution, reduce waste, expand recycling, conserve water and drive environmentally responsible restoration, among others.
• Information Technology: Raytheon's information technology programs range from delivering Cybersecurity capabilities to our customers to participating in industrywide cyberthreat information sharing initiatives. Other projects in 2009 included Raytheon's donation of The Family Technology Center at the Shades of Green® on the Walt Disney World® Resort. Raytheon continued to spearhead green IT initiatives in 2009 and was awarded an InfoWorld Green 15 Award.
• Community Support: Raytheon's community involvement program centers on math and science education and support for the armed services. In 2009, Raytheon expanded its MathMovesU® initiative with new programs, including the Sum of all Thrills at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot®. Raytheon also contributed to help build the Fisher House Boston, a facility that provides temporary lodging for families when a military member or dependent requires extended medical care. Across the company, Raytheon employees participated extensively in volunteer programs; employees gave 36,328 hours of their time in 2009, an increase of 12.7 percent compared with 2008.
