Reagan Foundation Bipartisan Education Summit Returns for Second Annual Convening
National conference to bring together leaders from diverse perspectives for discussion on American education and paths to reform
WASHINGTON, Feb. 21, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute today announced it will host the second Reagan Institute Summit on Education (RISE) in Washington, D.C., from April 10-11, 2019.
The bipartisan conference of leaders in education, policy, business and technology will build on the insights generated at last year's summit, which marked the 35th anniversary of the 1983 National Commission on Excellence in Education report "A Nation at Risk." This year's conference will consider the future of education in the U.S., specifically looking at the unique roles of state and federal governments in shaping our schools.
"President Reagan knew that the strength of our democracy depends on the excellence of its education," said Roger Zakheim, director of the Reagan Institute. "We began an important dialogue at RISE 2018, but that conversation is far from over. We look forward to once again gathering leaders from across a variety of sectors and industries to put aside differences and work together for the common good, discussing how we can help future generations of students and citizens sustain our republic."
Through various panel and plenary sessions, RISE 2019 will explore a wide range of education policy issues. Experts will weigh in on affordability and accessibility in higher education, the vital leadership role of states and governors, the changing needs of the workforce and creating a holistic approach to education, among other topics. Session themes include:
- Breaking Through: The Courage to Change
- The Workforce of the Future
- Measuring What Counts: Educating the Whole Child
- From P-12: The Challenges of Creating a New School House
- The Higher Education Horizon
- Setting Audacious Goals
The day of discussion will begin with an opening plenary on the power of innovation to catalyze change in our education system, and the event's closing plenary will feature a panel of governors from across the nation and the political spectrum to discuss the current state of education and what changes we should strive to implement by 2020.
RISE 2019 is convened by an honorary steering committee chaired by Sen. Lamar Alexander, chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and former U.S. secretary of education.
