SAN LEANDRO, Calif., May 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cristina Rodriquez, a 4th grader at Hesperian Elementary School, knows exactly the right way to recycle in Oro Loma; so does Chuwen Lui, a 10th grader at San Lorenzo High School. Both students were among the 1,800 students in the Oro Loma Sanitary District who entered the District's 21st annual Earth Day Poster Contest "Recycle RIGHT in Oro Loma."
On Earth Day, April 22, Cristina and Chuwen, along with 33 other students from schools across the District, found out they were winners in the contest. But it wasn't until an awards ceremony the evening of May 27, 2015, that they and the other winners found out exactly what prize they won. (Both Cristina and Chuwen were first place winners in their grade groups.) Nearly 250 family, friends, and guests were present at the Marina Community Center in San Leandro to see them receive their prizes.
"I'm always amazed at what our students are able to produce," said Jason Warner, Oro Loma Sanitary District General Manager. "It's so difficult to choose winners."
Prize categories included a Recycling Star Kindergarten group in which five students each won $100. First place winners in six grade groups won $700 each; second place winners $500 each; third place winners $350 each; and two honorable mentions winners won $150 each. Matching cash prizes were awarded to the students' schools.
In addition, 60 students received $25 Certificates of Merit awards, and schools that had eligible entries but no cash winners each received a $100 Participation Award.
In total, Oro Loma Sanitary District and their recycling partner, Waste Management, awarded $25,300 to students and schools in the District to support education and promote the value of recycling.
A complete list of winners and their posters may be found on www.oroloma.org.
