Red Sox Nation Rejoices Following Trophy Delegation Visit to Canada

HALIFAX, June 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ - In the wake of the 2013 World Championship Major League Baseball trophy visit to Halifax, NS, Red Sox fans seasoned or newly minted are still reeling from their brush with greatness.

Tom Higgins and his 7yr old son Sean Thomas who is a third generation Bosox fan, waited in line for a half hour at the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame to get their picture taken with the defending champions' trophy. "Some of my earliest memories are watching Sox games with my father, and today my son watches with me," said Higgins.

Other highlights of the visit included remarks from former Red Sox player Steve Lyons who addressed a crowd at the official trophy delegation welcome. Lyons spoke about how awestruck he was playing games at the Red Sox home turf, Fenway Park . "It's no different whether you're playing or not, you guys know it. You love it, just like I do,"

For Don Hyslop, a member of the executive of the Blue Nose Bosox Brotherhood, the most poignant moment of the visit came at the IWK Children's hospital in Halifax when a young baseball fan battling cancer came to see the trophy and held the Dr. Steinberg's championship rings. "His mother pointed out that the 2013 championship ring has their family's motto engraved on it, B-Strong", said Hyslop.

Dr. Charles Steinberg, executive vice-president of the Red Sox, said it is remarkable how global Red Sox Nation has become. "When you recognize that you have people who care about you, then its human nature to say 'Let's acknowledge that in a real, physical, personal way."

Dr. Steinberg was made an honorary chairman of the Nova Scotia based fan club the Bluenose Bosox Brotherhood who partnered with the Nova Scotia Tourism Agency to facilitate the visit. The trophy's visit comes just weeks after the Red Sox recognized Nova Scotia Day at Fenway Park on May 18^th in front of an audience of over 35,000 fans during a national broadcast. To commemorate the success of the partnership The Red Sox also designed a custom jersey with the name Nova Scotia and the number 14 as a gift for the Canadian province.

Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Michel Samson, was also on hand to greet the trophy delegation and recognized the longstanding relationship Nova Scotia has with Boston. "From the exchange of early settlers between our regions and Boston's heroic support following the single largest loss of life in Nova Scotia's history with the Halifax Explosion, it goes without saying our ties run deep." Minister Samson added, "Our newly reinstated cruise ferry service the Nova Star once again provides an important sea-link between New England and Nova Scotia, we anticipate welcoming many Bostonians aboard this summer."
