Registration Open: July 17 ANSI Brainstorming Session on Enabling Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Through Public-Private Partnerships

NEW YORK, June 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has opened registration for its July 17^th brainstorming session on enabling artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) through public-private partnerships. This session will focus on specific opportunities and challenges related to AI/ML and explore the use of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to share information and identify priority standards development activities. ANSI's efforts are performed under a grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to support the implementation of the U.S. Government National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology (USG NSSCET).

The session will take place at the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), 901 N. Glebe Road, Suite 300 Arlington, VA 22203. ANSI encourages interested organizations to have at least one representative attend in-person; however, limited remote participation is also available. Registration is requested by July 10^th.

AI is not just one technology, but a variety of software and hardware enabling technologies (machine learning, deep learning, knowledge representation) that can be applied in various ways in a potentially unlimited number of applications, ranging from manufacturing to financial services, and health care to transportation. This discussion-based session welcomes perspectives from a variety of stakeholders, including industry, standards development organizations, government, and academia, and others about:

• opportunities and challenges associated with AI/ML in healthcare and manufacturing;
• how PPPs could accelerate AI/ML general and application-specific standards development and technology integration into the marketplace;
• the relationship between standards readiness and relevant types of PPPs.

There is a longstanding recognition in the U.S. that standards are a building block for U.S. innovation, competitiveness, security, and quality of life. This fact has been formally recognized in U.S. law and policy, as well as in the United States Standards Strategy (USSS), and the USG NSSCET. The private-sector-led U.S. standardization system is one of the most wide-reaching, inclusive, and impactful public-private partnerships in our nation's history. As the USSS and USG NSSCET are implemented, and as partnerships grow, it is important to understand what has worked in the past, what options are on the table, and how to navigate standards development together.

ANSI is hosting a similar session on automated and connected infrastructure July 30^th in Dearborn, MI. The results from these discussions are anticipated to inform best practices and identify considerations which could be applied more generally to various CETs and leveraged by the broader research and standards community.
