More than 250,000 bikes are stolen in New York each year, and more than two million nation-wide according to the FBI. Yet fewer than two percent are returned to the rightful owner with many winding up for sale on eBay or Craigslist, mainly because so few bicycle owners have their bikes registered.
"Part of our mission is to educate New Yorkers about bike safety, but what's equally important is making sure your bike is also safe from the growing problem of bike theft," says Paul Winkeller, Executive Director of the New York Bicycle Coalition. "We're very pleased to partner with Rejjee to help New York riders protect their bikes and help local police track down stolen bikes and return them to their owners."
"Our goal is to have one million bikes registered and protected from loss/theft," says Ken Smith, co-Founder and Head of Product for Rejjee. "Everyone who rides a bike knows someone who has had a bike stolen. It's a sad but true fact." Smith is also an avid cyclist, bike commuter and volunteer Ride Safety Marshall for Boston Bike Party. "We want to help make bike theft a thing of the past. But what makes Rejjee unique and highly valuable to both users and cops tracking down stolen bikes is that Rejjee covers not just your bike but all of your valuables."
SAFE Bikes launched in Boston last summer, in partnership with the MBTA, Boston, Somerville, and Arlington, as well as several campuses in the greater Boston area. The program returned stolen bikes at seven times the national average and was profiled in a Fox 25 News story.
Rejjee is working with other associations around the country, including MassBike, MassCommute, and the Florida Bicycle Association. The company is a Microsoft CityNext partner, helping cities across the country reduce bike theft, and was a featured presenter at the National League of Cities. Rejjee has also been selected to present 'Reducing Bike Theft on Campus' at the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) national conference.
