Remedy Robotics and the Australian Stroke Alliance Enter Strategic Partnership to Bring Endovascular Care to Hospitals Across Australia

Remedy Robotics has been selected by the Australian Stroke Alliance as its exclusive robotics partner to expand access to endovascular thrombectomy, the gold standard in stroke care

As part of the agreement, the Stroke Alliance has selected Remedy as its exclusive robotics partner to expand access to immediate stroke intervention. Remedy will work with the Stroke Alliance to gain regulatory approval and to roll out its system to hospitals across Australia.

Cardiovascular diseases, such as stroke, are the number one cause of death and disability worldwide. One in four Australians will experience a stroke in their lifetime, with over 8,000 losing their lives each year and 65% of survivors living with lifelong disability. Endovascular intervention, such as endovascular thrombectomy – a procedure in which clots are removed from the brain – is widely considered the gold standard of treatment for cardiovascular emergencies. However, due to its complexity and the risk of complications, endovascular thrombectomy is only available at select specialist hospitals concentrated in metropolitan areas, significantly limiting access. Because cardiovascular emergencies like stroke are extremely time-sensitive and require immediate intervention, this limited availability is a significant barrier to effective treatment, particularly for Australians living in rural and regional areas.

Improved access to endovascular intervention has the potential to transform cardiovascular care, particularly for stroke, which causes over 160 million disability-adjusted life-years lost every year. In Australia, a study prepared for the Stroke Foundation by Monash University estimated an economic cost of stroke of over $9 billion per year, with over 440,000 survivors living in the community. By 2050 it is estimated that these figures will more than double. These trends are consistent worldwide, making the challenge to increase access to endovascular intervention and thrombectomy all the more urgent.
